IPA fans should check out Dry Dock's Hop Abomination. It is 100+IBUs. (Technically it is impossible to go higher than that depending on alcohol and carbohydrate content). As I said earlier, I am not a hop head, but this is one of my faves.

They just started canning their beer and distributing it, so I am not sure of the reach of their distribution. Worth checking out. Their brewery is awesome too. Super chill, tons of board games and shuffleboard to play. They dont serve food, but they allow everyone to bring in their own food or have it delivered. Allow dogs on the patio. And best of all, it is attached to the Brew Hut homebrew store! So you can drink beer while milling your grains and buying supplies!

I find IBU to be a pretty meaningless number as far as taste goes. Ive had 100 IBU beers that didnt seem very hoppy or bitter and 60 IBU beers that seemed much more so. I know it has to do with other factors in the beer such as the malt content and types of hop and how/when they're added when brewing. Either way, I generally disregard IBU and just have to taste it. Overly sweet/malty IPAs are not very good, IMO. Regardless of the IBU on the bottle.

Before I moved from IL there was an Ale House that opened up in town that my buddies and I would frequent. They had like 9 craft taps that changed constantly but always had Schlitz on tap. The owner said it was, in his opinion, the best of the American macro lagers.

Yep. Fair enough. As far as IPAs go anyway. When I see lower numbers (in the 10-50 range), I can get a sense of what to expect. But you are correct that there is so much variability at the high end. I just laugh when people put 1000 IBUs or some rubbish. Not possible. And there again, just adding hops to add hops is not the way to make a good beer.

I'd agree. For shitty beer it's the best I think. That pains me to say having a grandfather that only drank Old Style.

Seems to be a huge problem with American craft beer, trying to outdo one another in some meaningless way rather than making a good beer. Sometimes I think brewers are more concerned about being unique than making a good beer. Adding strange ingredients, crazy labels/names, hophead fad, oak fad, etc. Lot of beer fans seem to be like music fans too, trying to one up one another in the obscure department when most don't seem to know a whole lot.

Heh, Wicked Weed had their first anniversary party a few weeks back. They opened a cask of beer at the top of every hour that each brewer had created for the occasion. I had 3 of these, wishing I had only had 2 afterwards. The second one was an ale base with gummy bears added. Eh gads. Bad. Now the first was a Brown Ale with Habinero Peppers and Chocolate added, that wasn't bad once I figured out why my throat was burning. However the final beer I tried the head brewer made and it was terrific. So yea, I don't understand some of the trends to throw everything into a beer. Gummy Bear Beer, wish they had refrained from making. Some of the girls/ladies there liked it though >shrugs<

I have never made an IPA. Mostly because I like experimenting with different styles. But I certainly havent gone that exotic. I saw a picture of a guy making froot loop beer. I have made winter beers with cinnamon, nutmeg, and raspberry. And Chili beers with serranos. I've made some rye beers. And now this oak bourbon stout. But none of those are too over the top. Although according to the Reinheitsgebot, they are not real beer! (granted yeast wasnt part of what was allowed because they didnt know about it.)

It was a 1 off for the Anniversary Party, they even put two gummy bears in the glass of beer as a "surprise". I, was nice about it all, but it was far from my favorite.

I have fond memories of Hamm's and Schmitt's, and Schlitz. Before we went to London in 2010, I would buy 30-packs of Tecate or PBR (unironically). Since then it's been Strongbow.

I haven't taken the tour yet but it's certainly on my to - do list. Come to think of it, I could do that next week. I have goofy days off so I could go in the middle of the week. Hmmmmmm...
