Fire Sale!
OK…since the Cubs are going no where besides the basement. The Cubs should trade their aging players and players who will attract teams. Just to build for the future and for years to come. And finally bring the World Series back to Chicago.
Players the Cubs should look to trade:
1) P Carlos Zambrano: As much as I hate to say this… I think the Cubs should finally see if they can trade him and what they can get in return. Zambrano is still in his prime and is pitching exceptional this year. Right now, his stock is pretty high and the starting pitching market is expected to be small this summer. But don’t forget he has a no trade cause and has repeated that he wants to finish his career as a Cub. So that can play dividends when it comes to a trade. But just told Ken Rosenthal a few days ago, he will accept a trade if the Cubs approached him.
2) 1B Carlos Pena: Pena could draw a good amount of attention in the next month of so. He has tons of power and has shown it as of late, He’s also a gold glove first baseman. His down falls are he won’t hit for a good average and is a pull hitter. He’s also only on a 1 year deferred contract. The Cubs used Pena as a 1 year rental so they can go out this offseason for a 1B such as Prince Fielder or Albert Pujols.
3) OF Kosuke Fukudome: I bet he will be attractive this summer. His early year slump has not happened and will interest teams. He plays outstanding defense, will hit for an OK average and has regular speed. Not too slow or too fast.
4) 3B Aramis Ramirez: He’s in his last year of his contract and with a good next month, he may attract teams. His average is not too bad this year but he can’t hit with runners in scoring position. Also, the power seemed like it has gone away and his rbi’s are way down. His defense has looked OK this year. He has made plays when he had too, but also has had mental lasps.
5) OF Marlon Byrd: Byrd is still on the DL with facial fractures but may return in mid to late July. I still think he can be a trade candidate as he’s not a bad player, good clubhouse guy, good defender and has a cheap acceptable contract.
6) OF Alfonso Soriano: We all know this is a pipedream but we can dream, right? If the Cubs were able to deal him with not paying all of his contract, they should. But that’s not going to happen. In the recent days, Alfonso Soriano said he would waive his NTC if asked.
7) C Geovany Soto: I think right now is the best time to trade Soto while his stock is not too low. I think he will bring in good enough of prospects. Castillo keeps mashing the ball in Triple A and I doubt he will do worse than Soto. Also, Castillo is a good defender.
OF Reed Johnson: Johnson is having a good year and will attract attention. He’s a good defender, an all out player and a good clubhouse guy. All of his teammates love him. He may not hit for the best but he will improve a team’s ballclub in many aspects of the game.
9) IF Blake DeWitt: DeWitt is still young and hasn’t played bad this year when given time. He has been hitting the ball and can play all over the diamond. Also, he still hasn’t reached arbitration so he’s a cheap utility option.
10) C Koyie Hill: This is laughable all the way. The Cubs will get nothing for him and are better off just releasing him. But that won’t happen.
11) P Randy Wells: Since Wells’s rookie season, he has been anywhere from perfect. He has been up and down to say the least. So, the Cubs should trade him before he struggles big time and his trade stock decreases a lot. If made available, teams should be calling.
12) RP John Grabow: The Cubs should just trade him for what they can get. Just for salary relief would work, he has been horrible all season long. But I doubt there will be a lot of interest in him. However, teams in need of RP badly, I can see it then.
13) RP Jeff Samardzija: He still has a NTC but is in his last year of his contract. If he had the chance to land with a contending team, I can see him accepting a trade. A lot of teams are in need of RP and will gauge interest.
14) RP-closer Carlos Marmol: As much as I hate to say it, but I think it may be a good idea to trade Marmol while is stock in way up there. He has been one of the best closers in the last year and a half and has a more than reasonable contract. Also, I know RP don’t attract good prospects but I think the Cubs can get a good enough package for Marmol.
Also players than could be involved are Kerry Wood and Jeff Baker. I want Wood to finish his career with the Cubs…so I say just keep him and he end up on the Cubs coaching staff when he retires. Also, Baker is still young and I love how he kills lefties. I think he can be a good piece next year to what should be a whole new ball club. In terms of winning. Dempster should also be shopped but general manager Jim Hendry said Dempster is not going anywhere so forget about that option. So, the most likely means. he’ll pick up his 14MM player option next season.
As we all know all these players won’t be traded and close to 75% won’t but it was a good thought on who and how much players could be traded.
This is a part 1 of 2 parts. The 2nd part will be trade scenarios with all 14 players in trades. That will be posted in the upcoming days.
