A topic I've actually not seen here, and one that I think will be hard pressed to turn into an argument. Figured it would be a nice break from the politics/economy/bullshit we all argue about.

Personally, I haven't fished nearly as much as I would have liked this year. Been busy with work, the kids, and hockey. For me, there's nothing better than wading a stream, creek, or river, and fishing for whatever happens to be hungry that day. Mostly just enjoying the seclusion and outdoors with my brother or dad. I don't use live bait too much. Typically stick to plastics. Have caught some really nice fish this year, mostly smallmouth. Got a 21 inch smallmouth out of Lake Michigan while perch fishing, and several 17-19" smallies out of the Kankakee River. Have caught a few decent smallies out of the DuPage River too. I really like fishing the K3, as you just never know what you're going to catch. Catfish, walleye, drum, smallmouth bass, even crappie and white bass. I've pretty much caught everything out of there, except Gar.

Aside from wandering through the rivers and streams, I'll get out to the lakefront every now and then and bring home some Perch. Mmmm, fun, delicious, breaded, yellow striped morsels. I love perch.

I also get out to a few local lakes and ponds every now and then, and catch little sunfish or bass with the kids. That is always a good time, but I don't get much fishing done between taking fish off hooks and untangling lines.

I would love to get into the steelhead, trout, and salmon fishing in the rivers in IN and WI thought. That looks like an absolute blast, but I need to commit some funds into the gear for it. It's on my bucket list though.

So, who here fishes? How often? What kind of fishing do you enjoy? Let's hear it.

Don't be so sure about that. They could argue over what type of bait to use.

I grew up fishing in Crystal Lake and the surrounding ponds. Sometimes we went to the Fox river. I fish once or twice a year now. I wish I had time to go more often. My preference is deep sea fishing on an overnight group charter boat in the Gulf. I've always come back with my limit, and it was well worth the cost. Best fish I ever caught was a 45# black fin tuna in the Gulf. Damn tasty grilled fresh I might add. Worst fishing trip ever was when I was stationed in the UK. Chartered a North Sea/English Channel fishing trip with a bunch of buddies. Almost the entire boat was hung over and spent most of the day sea sick, cold and wet. I think the total hall for the day on the entire boat was one very pathetic small shark and a sea cucumber one guy snagged.

Waiting for the master-baiter joke....

In all seriousness I loved fishing in high school, and since I've made the move up to North Dakota full time I picked it up again this summer. I've got a lot of friends from Warroad, MN up on Lake of the Woods, some really really good fishing up there, tons of Walleye, some pretty big Pike too. Didn't really catch anything all that great this summer mostly Walleye. I'm debating whether or not to try some ice fishing this winter.

Uptown baby!
I think ANY thread on IHN has the VERY likely potential to turn into an ideological clusterfuck of epic proportions. Having said that, I will admit that I have never fished but that a part of me has always wanted to learn fly fishing.

Fishing charters are all about the captain running the charter. Good captain, pretty much guaranteed to have a good time. Shitty captain? Well, yeah.

There has to be some pretty fucking good fishing up there in North Dakota, no? Ice fishing is something I'd like to try as well. Again, have to commit the funds.

The part of yer noggin that resides in Montana?

I can't stand Fly Fishing. Although as you say in Montana, that's their thing. They use "float boats" and float down the rivers Fly Fishing. I'd rather us an ultra lite spinning any day. But that said, if you tie the flys right and know what the Trout are biting on, the fly will get more fish than the lure. The State record Rainbow is over 30lbs in Montana and comes about four miles up the Kootenai River where my house is. Can walk out my back door, go about 50ft and the River is roaring right on by.

That said I'd take Musky, Northern, Walleye or Lake Trout fishing any day. Traditionalist I guess. LOL.

Next year the plan is Steel Head on the Columbia. It's catch and release.

If anyone wants to take a great Adventure I suggest heading up to Northern Manitoba. There are a number of excellent lakes, such as Grass River Provnicial Park (Reed Lake) that from June through late August I have never found anything to match. Need a boat though.

From what I hear fishing in North Dakota isn't bad, but honestly all the fishing I did this summer was in Minnesota, probably cause you didn't need a license this summer and mostly cause I've got a bunch of friends from Minnesota who fish almost every weekend but I've heard good things about North Dakota.

I'd love to take a trip to Manitoba some day after I get my float plane license and rent a plane and hop around some of those lakes though.

In August, I went crabbing for the first time off Lopez Island in the San Juan Islands, off the coast of Washington state. My wife's cousin bought a tug boat in 1987 and refurbished it. We caught our limit of Dungeness crab, 10 each, and boiled them right on the boat. Ate one there and took the rest home and ate crab the next 4 days. Yum!

It's mostly salmon fishing for me. Right now the pinks are running in the Fraser River. The coho will follow shortly. I spend a fair bit of time on the Vedder and Chilliwack rivers which are about 20-40 minutes away depending I where I fish. I also enjoy fishing for trout in the lakes with my fly rod. This week I might try to catch a salmon on the fly. That will be a hoot if it doesn't break my rod.

On a sad note, one of my fellow employees lost his son last week to the Fraser River. He was 24 and fishing with buddies, they tried to wade across to a sand bar and he was taken as his waders filled and pulled him down. No one had a remote chance of helping him.

Stay safe everyone!

That's terrible. Was the river high or something, or is it typically like that?

That sucks Cho. Everytime we are in Montana I spell it out to my son. If you fall in the Kootenia River, they will find you in Idaho. DO not **** around with the river. It's doing 500MPH at times the Damn is open wide.

Need to be careful around certain rivers for sure.

Cho you ever go out for Halibut? I hear the fishing in and around Vancouver is awesome.

That is sad to read and hear about. I have pretty much given up on my days of wading and fishing after slipping on a spillway, getting washed down and have my waders fill up and I was all alone. Scary moment ......

I am in as well. My Pops has wanted to do a fly in, and I am hesitant. I have seen those propes first hand, and what they look like, and what the endure. Scares the hell outta me.

Ah yes propes those are very important parts and they do take a lot of stress but that's why you check them before you fly

You ******. You know what i was trying to say. Damn giant sausage fingers and my propensity for bad speeling.

Props. Propellers.The giant fan.

The propeller is a giant fan. It keeps the pilot cool. Don't believe me? Watch how much the pilot sweats when it stops working mid flight.
