pretty entertaining watching the 180 folks are doing with the chiefs right now. just a couple months ago the chiefs were "done" and not that good. now here they are the super bowl champs again and people think they are the best thing since sliced bread again
I thought they were done. But they don’t win this SB without Spags.

Its why I was honestly scratching my head earlier in the playoffs when the Caleb Williams people were pounding their chests that CJ Stroud took an understaffed Texans roster to the playoffs and got a win.

I mean, that's nice and all, but I thought the goal was to win Super Bowls?

It's why I find the people who think a QB can solve all issues are high on their own shit. One look at either Super Bowl team, and shit, even at the 4 teams in the Championship games to go to the Super Bowl, and you can tell the Bears are still really deficient in talent when it comes to those teams. A mythical QB doesn't solve those issues. In fact, the argument can be made that those QBs become mythical BECAUSE they also have great talent around them to make incredible plays or allow them to make incredible plays. It's almost like *gasp* football is a team sport.

My only point being, even if the Bears draft Williams, they have a lot of holes to fill, and honestly, are likely still 2-3 drafts away from being at that level. It's why the 'haul' is so attractive to many of us - it represents an opportunity to close the gap in a single year rather than being 2-3 away. And Brock Purdy is proof you don't need a God-mode QB to compete in a Super Bowl (if this were played under last years' rules, the 49ers would be the champs, I believe?) - you need an elite defense that can shut down the other team's God mode QB...

I think most know this.

Yes I know you can find a few that don’t. But most will.

And yes…. You don’t need a “god mode” QB. But it sure helps. And if Poles thinks one is potentially there it surely makes sense to take your shot right?

Helps to have a HOF DT and hit on a bunch of draft picks still on their rookie deals.

Which gets to a point I’ve made for years. Depth is important …. But having a few true blue chip difference makers is most important. The Chiefs change huge portions of their roster every year. But 3 guys stay the same. (Which is while I will be SHOCKED if CJ hits free agency)

Reports are coming out now that they will do whatever they can to keep him. Used to be that they were going to let him walk.

Here's where I land:

If you think Caleb is "THAT GUY" and you draft him with the understanding you need to still build up the offensive line around him and get him more weapons, then that is one thing. But that is also going to take time, and the Bears fandom isn't a patient bunch. Based on their behavior all season, they are going to blame the QB for a lot more than what his actual responsibility is. Its not a great situation for Caleb.

However, you can close the talent gap with a trade for a haul. You might even be able to double dip haul. And that gets your team competitive immediately.

Because what I come back to is this - if the Bears pass on Williams, is that it? Its all over?

No great quarterbacks came after Namath? After Bradshaw? After Elway? After either Manning? After Brady? etc - which is my point - even if the Bears passed on Williams, and Williams became everything people thought he would, the absolute volume of ammunition in the draft the Bears would have at their disposal over the next several years would allow them to get whoever the "next" phenom is after Williams. They can keep parlaying these picks further and further, and Poles is on record for liking picks - he's anti-rams that way.

I think that's what I push back against the most - that somehow if the Bears don't take Williams, then its all over and the Bears should just roll over and die because its all pointless - that's sort of the attitude the Caleb people seem to have when confronted with a possibility of no Caleb Williams.

But I just think a haul is more beneficial for the team at this point. Take the haul and then take a flyer on whatever QB drops to the top of the 2nd round...

Yet another reminder the media which always acts so certain has no fucking idea what these teams are going to do.

While that is true, Pacheco's fumble in the red zone was 3pts they lost at least. Small plays like that are forgotten. Mahomes had 399 yards of total offense. This wasn't like Big Ben's 1st Super bowl win. Mahomes looked pedestrian in the 1st half but the 2nd half and overtime he was vintage Mahomes. He was never going to hang 30+ on the 9ers. I think we've gotten used to big play Mahomes. He is maturing and is able to be patient now and slowly pick teams apart.
This is all for certain. What is also for certain is that a blocked extra point let a FG take the game into overtime, instead of one last play in the 4th quarter. And the kicker wasn't just 4/4, but also succeeded on a 57 yard kick. This game was a fantastic SB.

You could also say having THE most elite out of the 2 most elite Offensive HC’s in the league helps. Flus will get us there though…

Cut Thurney, Reid and MVS and that gets them 60m in cap. Can then re-sign Jones and still have 30m to spend.

Chiefs also had a top D this year. That said 9ers were #3 in points allowed so it could be argued that a top QB beats a top D. MVP!

and Spag's has been the D coordinator for KC since 2019. Not every season was full of accolades like this one on his side of the ball but you don't see Andy Reid bringing a new d-coordinator in after an off year.

Kinda crazy how the Chiefs managed to put an elite defense together while paying Mahomes, and so quickly too.

Chiefs hit on a fair number of mid and late round picks but now they are starting to run into trouble cap wise. Chris Jones isn't coming back as he is going to want to make that Bag on what could be his last contract. You remove him from the front 4 and it's kind of average at best.

Also, something not many talk about, is that when a team hits on a lot of mid-round guys, they come up for contracts much faster because of how the league is structured. Chiefs are going to have to start coming up with big money to keep their LB group together as well as that secondary.

The Chiefs were ripe for the taking this year... Yes, they won but man, Baltimore and San Fran also made some just fucking dumb decisions. I mean Baltimore is the #1 rushing team in the league (and every knows you can run on the Chiefs this year) but for some reason they only run the ball 8 times? San Fran had Purdy pass 38 times when McCaffrey was getting 4+ yards a carry and they stopped running play action and bootlegs in the 2nd half? I mean come on, there was some really shitty coaching by opposing teams that helped KC out alot.

Its like coaches kept thinking this was the KC team from 2 years ago, where they were an offensive juggernaut. If Baltimore just played they normal game, we wouldn't have even been talking about the Chiefs today.

I know a lot of people want to go “offense heavy” this draft but they’re so close on defense I’d love to see Poles finish it.

Really they only need 2 more players to finish the D imo. Interior pass rusher and Edge. I would lean towards addressing both in FA if you can and essentially pair a more veteran D with a young developing O by using the draft on the offensive side.

Part of that is because I think FA is better on D this year at Edge and 3T pending franchise tag decisions.

Don’t forget safety as EJ is gone.

Edge looks great in FA even with the expected tags. 3T I haven’t seen as much. Anyone you like?

They need to re-sign Sneed as well. But that would give them enough to do that pretty easily. Could probably mess with so yuu could keep Thuney even.
