Also... what game plan could have been implemented weeks ago?
Additionally I thought this tidbit from Justin was encouraging.
" Before Alexander's pick, Fields completed 16 of his first 19 passes and was having what he called "one of his best games passing-wise."
"The stats aren't going to show that," Fields said. "I felt really comfortable out there in the passing game and just have to keep improving and keep getting better.
"I just felt comfortable. I don't know what it was. I just felt comfortable." "
We can all see him growing.
He's just not progressing as fast as some on CCS would prefer.
The game plan of a more balanced attack, some runs mixed in but the primary focus is developing his passing attack, more quick hitting plays that get the ball out quick, get him in a rhythm throwing the ball, hit a few big chunk plays when the D allowed..
I feel better after this game because he is now actually working on his QB skills. I didnt think it was going well after the Pats game because not much had changed for his actual passing attack, he was averaging about 144 ypg in the beginning of the year when everyone started to think he might be a bust.. after the pats game his passing attack was about the same with 154ypg average. He still struggled to read the D, throw guys open, etc.. The thing that changed was he did everything with his legs.
This was frustrating because this year was shot anyway and the only thing that mattered was his development and he doesnt need to develop his running ability, he has that natural talent, but to be a real dual threat QB he needs to be an actual passer, and also for his longevity in the league the hits he was taking from running is not sustainable.
So the lack of working on passing was frustrating. This game I liked the game plan, he hit the short stuff, which helped his OL (its what every good QB does) he got a bunch of big chunk plays, I liked it. Yes there was some mistakes with the INTs, but so what, this is the year to make those mistakes so he can learn from them so they dont happen when we actually have a talented team.
Is it a concern that he keeps giving games away at the end? Sure it is, but the end of the game when there is little time on the clock is when you have to do it with your arm.. the skills they didnt really work on much this year. So its a concern yes, but its also a concern for the coaching staff for not working on that earlier
