How does that process work? I would think Lynch is worth more than 2 mil.

Free agents who sign qualifying offers [this season it was 2 million average] cancel each other out at the same level.

Lynch signs for 2.5 and we sign a safety for 3.5 they would cancel out and have no impact on comp picks.

If none of our guys sign qualifying free agent deals it could put the Amos and Callahan picks at jeopardy, assuming they leave, because there are not other deals for them to cancel out.

The Rams signed 0 qualifying free agents last season to protect their 2 3rd round picks.

Kyle Long just tweeted

"Bear for Life [praying hands]"

Possible extension to reduce cap hit. Would be a solid move.

#Bears RG Kyle Long has agreed to a restructured contract that will create some cap room and ensure he's with the team in 2019. He was due to count $8.5M vs. cap this year. Team player will be back.Brad Biggs added,

Dolphins are releasing Robert Quinn and Andre Branch.

Either would make a solid #3 OLB and would not effect comp picks.

not sure about quinn as he's a shell of his former self...branch would def be an interesting option and should come cheap.

My cheaper Callahan replacements

Tell me what you think of this general GM strategy...

Now that we have a contending team, and one that is going to be very tight on the cap, we've got to maintain with greater reliance on the draft and UDFAs, making the most of the low $ draft contracts (like Trubisky, Jackson, etc).

Towards that end, try to re-sign Callahan and Amos, but if we lose players like that, if we can... we should replace their ROSTER SPOTS with solid corresponding draft picks, not relatively expensive older vets.

If we can stay very competitive with a roster like:

S: Jackson/Bush/DHC/draft pick
CB: Fuller/Prince/McManis/draft pick/Toliver/Joseph

Then we can spend the limited FA money on missing impactful players where we really need it most -- like:

RB: a really good Hunt-type RB
OLB: a really good pass rusher (Wake, Suggs) to: have genuine fresh-player rotation of Mack/Floyd/Wake, and a sure effective passrusher if Floyd/Mack get injured.

Two years ago, top WR prospect John Ross set fire to the Combine with his 40 time. Now, sources say the #Bengals are shopping their former first rounder. A fresh start would be welcome by both parties, sounds like.

1.5 sacks in 14 games branch ?

He has averaged 4 sacks a season over the last 4 years.

He also should come pretty cheap.

He also does not count towards the comp picks.

Cap hits of 2 and 2.8 million over the next 2 years.

He would be an interesting add, but being light on picks it would depend on what they wanted for him.

The problem we are light on draft resources, which may force our hand at a couple of spots.

1.5 sacks in 14 games branch ?

like windy mentioned he's had +4 sacks the past few seasons...i liked him coming out of clemson and thought he should be a 3-4 olb instead of a 4-3 DE...he's never been very good against the run but has good bend in rushing the passer...for the bears he'd fit in well as a pass rushing specialist as the 3rd OLB.

Yes, we're light on draft picks, no 1st or 2nd; so only our 3rd Rounder may compete to start. So I'm not saying replace the lost FA starters with 2019 draft picks...

Rather the point I'm making is: if we lose out on Callahan and/or Amos, we use that money to get 2 impactful FAs (RB & OLB) missing from 2018 to help win the SB in 2019, RATHER than spreading out that money with 4-5 mediocre FAs who merely have a chance at beating out a current Bear.

As an example, if we lose Amos, we let Bush, DCH and a draft compete to start. And use that money on a blue chip RB and OLB. Don't waste that money on a FA Safety that will merely compete with the other 3 Safeties. Ultimately we want drafts to replace lost FAs. If spend on a FA, get an impactful player, and we don't need one at SS, compared to RB or OLB.

I just looked at his stat line, how the hell do you catch 21 balls and have 7 TDs? That's crazy. Would be interested for a conditional 6th/7th for next year.
