I have several large garden boxes. To keep the soil fresh every year I rotate in grass clippings, leaf debris, mus'mhroom compost, etc. Don't need to use fertilizer if you have good soil. Also, rotate your crops.

We have blueberries, marionberries, blackberries, Bing cherries, and apples permanently. Most years the garden has 4-5 types of tomatoes, 3-4 types of dukes, 8-9 types of peppers, multiple herbs, ground cherries, tomatillos, beans, peas, potatoes, and Walla Walla onions. I like to **** around and try different things every year too, so I have grown just about everything. Some did well (horsetail radishes) some didn't (celery).

Oh, I always stake most of my plants. Helps them get established in the cooler windy/wet weather.

Well the first big thing for me is to get the thatch out......or at least what I think is thatch. Then I got to fill in some depressions. After that - wooh hoo.

A few years ago I ordered an electric dethatcher from Sears. Works great.

Wish I was working in the garden instead of watching it snow. There's 4 feet of snow on the garden area.

My wife started a vegetable garden today. She started with onions, peppers and tomato's hopefully it is a success.

Where do you live? If it's warm enough, your peppers will be fine. They seem to be pretty resilient.

Spinach.

Has anyone grown it? Is it possible to grow it indoors w/ nitrogen-infused soil? All I know that (like most leafy green veggies) it needs to be in cool temperatures. I <3 spinach...and would love to grow my own...but gardening season is just too hot for it.

Spinach is super forgiving and can grow like a weed if you don't plot correctly. Indoors should be somewhat easy too, as long as you give the plant what it needs. That good X loving.

I wish I could do a little garden but my house has two huge oak tree's hovering above and sunlight is minimal.

Last year though, I did plant green peppers, cherry tomatoes, cilantro, some type of spicy pepper cant remember, in big ass pots, worked pretty well. Just a pain in the ass because I was constantly moving shit around trying to get some sun on them.

Not sure if I'm gonna do it again this year or not, gotta decide soon, though.

Getting seeds started today. Hope all this snow has a good effect this year. I want a whole winter's worth of tomatoes this year. And cabbages for kraut. Sick of buying inferior produce from whole foods.

My wife decided to do it by our kids bedroom window, gets enough sunlight through the day, as well as a shade once it hits about 430-500. I told her if it was a success I would move our fence line down about 4 feet, and do a whole area of corn.

That'd be cool, hope it works. Some plants don't need much sunlight to do their thang, so maybe I'll do a lil research and try and figure something out. It was kinda cool tending to the plants and being able to harvest stuff throughout the year that we grew.

Yeah I'm looking forward to harvesting them, my wife did a pallet garden so it isn't very big. My kids already think we are farmers. lol

What do you all know about putting dead leaves in a garden bed?

I live in an area w/ several trees...and the majority of my yard is covered w/ leaves. I tilled up my garden yesterday and today...but will need to again.

Would it be beneficial to cover the garden bed w/ a cpl inches of dead leaves before I till again?

Yeah, I don't test pH levels, either...but the area I live in is known for having really good soil. Last year, I just mixed in a cpl bags of miracle grow soil after I tilled. This year my garden is going to be significantly larger (probably 15'x15'), so -- we'll see how it goes. lol.

What all does everyone plan on planting?

I'd love to get onions, banana peppers, bell peppers, hot pepper assortments, broccoli, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, and zucchini this year. My wife's grandma does a crapload of corn and green beans, so we're set there already.

I live in a condo, my balcony doesn't get a lot of sunlight (it faces north) and only have a few planter boxes, so probably begonias like last year.
