So had a near break in experience last night...gonna get a security system and a firearm. Any suggestions?

Just for clarification... wtf is a near break in experience? Are we taking 5 guys with a battering ram assaulting the door or just a shady looking character looking at the door?

I would avoid a shotgun, mostly because of size, but if you do get one, a pistol grip mossberg 500 .410 is a good compromise. Especially if you have a wife that might need to use it.

A full frame pistol is probably the way I would go. Something that you are comfortable shooting.

As for security system... if you want something to make noise to hopefully scare perps off, then go for one of those professional ones that put sensors on everything. (Most robberies in my area are smash and grab so those alarms don’t do much except give them a timer)

If you just want camera evidence that someone was in your house, you can go as cheap as a camera and dvr bundle from Harbor Freight. Just make sure you hide the dvr well and put everything on UPS’s so that they don’t die when the power goes out. (A long with your WiFi). I use Foscam cameras. I also configured port forwarding and made at least one of the cameras accessible via phone while I’m away. (Just don’t use DDNS to support your camera’s accessibility outside of your home network. It’s a security risk I wouldn’t take)

There are other options, like Arlo, that save your camera data to the cloud and you can access that via mobile devices no matter where you are. (I just don’t want my video data stored in the cloud)

LMAO, all that security when all you need to do is have a locked deadbolt. Talk about a sucker

Interesting... what kind of deadbolt? What would you put this locked deadbolt on? Is this a single entry dwelling? Windows? Do you ever enter or leave? What if the criminal tailgates you on the way in?

When a burglar asks for your valuables, just give them to him. They’re not as important as the lives of you and your loved ones.

#urblocklifelessons

What if your valuables are your butt... and the criminal(s) want it? Do you just give it to them? - Funny?

What if your valuables are your 14yo daughter's innocence and you're not home?

Or your cousin and her daughter are home alone and someone breaks in and beats your cousin to death and just ignores the 8yo before stealing a couple things worth less than $200? Leaving the 8yo to wander into a construction site the next day covered in blood asking why her mom won't wake up?

Not funny anymore?

luckily the pieces of shit stole a laptop from a nearby apartment so the police were able to finally track them down.

Yes that’s is the one. You get a rifle caliber in a compact size. If you shop around and know how to buy online you can get it for 1500

I have another suggestion. Smith and Wesson governor. You can use three different calibers.

If that is what you want buy a five seven and call it a day...

Illinois laws seem to be pretty fucked up....was reading that if say, someone breaks into your home and comes into your bedroom and you shoot and kill them, you could be prosecuted.

Befriend your neighbors. Especially ones who are home when you are at work and will keep an eye out for you. True security comes from relationships.

When you are freaked out about a break in is maybe not the time to go buy a gun, unless you are willing to first learn firearm safety.

Of course. Who just buys a gun without learning how to use it?

Would you rather be dead or be alive and have to defend your actions?

You can also go the less than lethal method.

Two rubber bullets in your shotgun and then the remainder buck shot.

If two rubber bullets don't change their mind then I think you can consider yourself in a fight for your life.

Sure but not really the point. If you break into someone’s home, you should expect whatever you get. It’s insane that criminals are protected like this.

I don't know Illinois law, but here in New Mexico we have Castle laws.

Which give a person a lot of leeway when it comes to defending their home.

I don't know Illinois law

Neither does Enasic.

"Deadly force is that which is intended to kill or cause great bodily harm. Deadly force is not always excusable. You may use deadly force to protect yourself or another person if you believe it is necessary to prevent death or great bodily harm. You may not use deadly force to protect property unless you are doing so to prevent a forcible felony. Forcible felonies are defined in 720 ILCS 5/2-8 and include murder, sexual assault, robbery, burglary, arson, kidnapping, aggravated battery, and “any other felony which involves the use or threat of physical force or violence against an individual.”

I think some nutjobs just take issue with the fact that laws wont protect them when they try to fulfill their homicidal fantasy of sitting in the dark with their front door open, waiting to execute some dummy who enters their abode.

It depends on the situation. Ultimately, it is up to a jury or judges discretion. Especially if the intruder is unarmed. But in a burglary situation, are you really gonna frisk them to find out? You could absolutely be charged.
