I've mentioned this site in a few other threads but thought I would contribute to the new sub-forum. I've used this site quite a bit to find good meats around me and found a raw milk supplier really close to me. They have a map feature that you can search any area in the country. The rest of the site is full of good info about the benefits of grass finishing animals for food and the disgusting-ness of commercial feed lots

I agree, I've had it...Grocery stores sometimes have it on sale, even then its expensive, but I will usually buy some...But getting it straight from the source here they usually want you to buy it in bulk, which a) i have no room for and b )definitely can't afford it.

Lucky. I can't find a single seller of raw milk nearby. I can find cheese made from raw milk, but no raw milk vendors. Well, scratch that, I can find raw goat milk, which I like better anyways. But no raw cow milk.

I tried it at one of my friends house and will never go back to store bought milk. I've never had goat milk though. Does it taste similar to cow milk?

Yes.. Milk in the grocery store is essentially processed food.

I have a place that's less than a mile away. I have no idea what they charge, but it came up on the map of one of those websites that lists all the places. Its a very small farm...Its maybe an acre big..they have a few cows, some horses that's it. My guess it is use to be one of the giant farms out here before the suburban explosion in the 60's and 70's that filled the area. Somehow they kept a small operation going.

I've never actually had raw milk, just heard its better for you..

So if you get raw Milk can you still get like 1% or 2% or Skim or is it all just Whole Milk?

Isn't drinking whole milk kinda like eating Iced Cream instead of Yogurt? I thought Whole Milk had a ton of fat in it?

Whole milk is a little over 3% fat. The difference between the two is the processing of store bought milk. It's heated to a high temp very quickly to kill any nasty shit in the milk. The problem is that this process also kills any beneficial bacteria and nutrients also.

Raw milk is put through a strainer and chilled...That's it. The real danger with raw milk isn't really the stuff in the milk. Though, if you don't have a decent immune system you should start very slowly if you decide to go for it. The real danger is in the cleanliness of the environment and equipment used to harvest the milk. If those two things aren't clean-room clean, it gets dangerous pretty quickly. Thankfully, for me, the farm I get mine from hasn't had any incidents. And the regulations for selling raw milk are pretty tight so the chances of something going wrong are pretty low

Time to kill a myth of food.. Not all fat is bad for you. Most of it isn't in fact. However we have a large amount of bad fat in the typical American diet....known as trans fat. Margarine is god awful for you... Butter or Lard is actually okay.... Anything cooked with vegetable oil (Its name is an oxymoron) is trans fat..other oils are also transfat but generally safe are olive and coconut oils...

I guess I just feel its justified for me to use it...I pay $8-9 on Amazon for a 16 oz jar and it lasts me quite awhile. I do all my cooking with it.

Interesting, I didn't know Margarine was that bad for you.

My mom always used Margarine rather than Butter when I was a kid, still does to this day or she uses the "I Can't Believe Its Not Butter" type junk.

When I moved out on my own I just went with Butter over Margarine because I like the taste.... I can't imagine Butter is healthy but you are just saying its healthier than Margarine correct?

As for the raw Milk.... so its better than processed Milk because the good stuff in it is not killed with the bad stuff.... but if you drink raw Milk you may introduce stuff that overwhelms your immune system and makes you sick?

What are the benefits in raw Milk that you lose in processed Milk? I am just wondering if it might be worth exploring.

As we're on the topic of grass fed...Grass fed butter is the most healthy for you. Its full of "good" saturated fats. Margarine is just fake food and its something that ants won't even eat. Now grass fed butter is nearly impossible to find in a grocery store and if you can, its expensive as shit... but regular butter is fine...just use it like you always have...as a spread or in cooking...

Some milk is bad from farmers..when they started the processing of milk in the 1800's, they had no means of testing milk, so they just outlawed raw milk all together. Also, the "scare" started because of bacteria...it was stated as a general knowledge thing that ALL bacteria was bad for you (you know how this country loves absolutisms).....Raw milk, like say greek yogurt, contains a lot of GOOD bacteria.

I would say Lactose intolerant people will suffer from raw milk and even people who have a slight exposure may suffer bigger side effects from raw milk. I would say its dependent on the person and again, on where the milk is coming from. Today we have testing available to be sure the source is good.

I've recently started more unsweetened Almond Milk but that's more a calorie cut than anything.

Processed foods aren't inherently bad for you. It's a moderation issue. Most studies where they find "ZOMG MILK WILL KILL YOU" involve people ingesting so far beyond what the normal human can and would ingest it makes the study nearly meaningless.
