Maybe I was too young to really remember Magic but I was never impressed watching him play. Then again I always felt that way about Drexler too. Obvious all time greats but never gave me that "Wow" factor.

I'm 26 so maybe I missed all the great Magic/Clyde. But even watching highlights I never come away think "Holy shit!". However, both of them IMO weren't the smoothest basketball players to play the game. Drezler could dunk and fly but had this odd "Old guy at the YMCA" awkwardness about his game in terms of dribbling and shooting. Magic the same thing...but God damn were they good.

back than when I was a kid I didnt know shit about stats and what is a good defense and yada yada yada and I still dont with the NBA. I just state magic because he was like you said "smooth". the current generation of players have so many more "flashy" type players that wow everyone.

Do you remember watching the pistons back than? that was fun.

If Magic Johnson on the fast break doesn't move you...nothing will...

Same here. By the time Magic played the Bulls in '91 he was in the tail end of his career. I remember a little more about Drexler, but even still he was slowed down a bit. I would assume the times we live in has a lot to do with how we feel about players.

I mentioned Oscar Robertson earlier, but I'm 29. I never saw the guy play, but I've read about him and seen some highlights (I honestly thought he was a 2-guard, my bad on that). But if I was this same age when he was playing, how many chances would I honestly get to see him play?? I can see Lebron/Kobe/Rose/Anthony play anytime I want now.

Correct me if I am wrong, but you didn't watch Clyde did you during that time span? Anyone watching the Rockets would say Olajuwon won them and that the Clyde was not the same Glyde.
You are wrong. I've been a fan of the NBA since I was able to understand what basketball was because of guys like Jordan, Olajuwon, Drexler, Barkly, et. al. I've never not watched the NBA or attended games. I was one of those people still going to games in the 300 level during the Floyd/Cartwright/Skiles/Boylan/Del Coacho years.

You are right that Drexler in '95 was not the Drexler of '92, but that doesn't mean his presence on the court didn't allow some open looks for Olajuwon. If you want to tell me that the Rockets winning in '94 was all Olajuwon, I would agree with you. Dude was a monster in that series, but c'mon, you're being silly if you don't think Drexler had a major role in the '95 playoffs.

I remember that series and I am not saying Drexler wasn't a contributor. I am saying that Olajuwon would have won it again without him.

noting something back a couple of pages...larry and magic were never fantastic athletes and never really had wow moments but they were two of the smartest and smoothest players the NBA ever had...

Magic played all 5 positions. All 5 positions in one game and went for 42/15/7. You're telling me he did that but not from an athletic standpoint?

There's a difference between someone who's well rounded at 6'8 and has INCREDIBLE basketball IQ than someone who is a monster physical specimen and can dunk from anywhere at anytime, run like a race horse, incredible strenght, etc.

Lebron has a pretty high basketball IQ, but that is neither here or there.....

My problem with your statement, is that you can't be put into the all-time great status in the NBA without being a great athlete. It is just silly to think otherwise. I can't think of one single player who is considered great who only got by on their basketball IQ.

Neither Bird or Magic were particularly athletic...Jordan, Lebron, Kobe...those are athletes...Pippen, athlete. I don't put Bird and Magic on that level when it comes to athleticism. Those were born and bred basketball players, very smart, very competitive and highly skilled.

I respectively disagree.

I will says guys like Michael, Kobe, and Lebron are freaks of nature and are in a class of their own, but c'mon, you can't say the two of them were not athletic.

By normal human standards i'd say Larry and Magic are good athletes but if you're talking about the NBA those guys are probably below average...

houheffna is right....magic and bird had nearly everything but being really athletic....
