Steve jobs never produced a product i could honestly afford. Did a great job and producing and advertising products that we all think we need and want though then attaching high price tags on them. Jobs was a great businessman but he has no right to say what he did in that quote. He never walked that walk. He was a master of marketing.

Apple has also perfected "perpetual obsolescence." You just have to have the latest product, though there's only been minimal improvement over the last version released 9 months earlier.

California is really smart.

Currently 14 other states -- including New York, Washington and Massachusetts -- have adopted California's smog emissions rules as their own.

California has also previously set zero-emissions vehicle mandates, which 10 other states have also currently adopted.

Companies including Ford Motor Corp., Chrysler Group LLC, General Motors Co., Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. and others submitted testimony Thursday supportive of the new standards.

..."Our research shows a $1,400 to $1,900 car price increase. But over the life of the vehicles, the owners save $6,000 in reduced fuel and maintenance costs," board spokesman David Clegern said.

One of the nation's foremost consumer groups, the Consumers' Union, the policy and advocacy division of Consumer Reports, supported the changes.

The rules will "protect consumers by encouraging the development of cleaner, more efficient cars that save families money, help reduce the American economy's vulnerability to oil price shocks and reduce harmful air pollution," according to a letter from the group.

Okay, here is a question, who pays for the electricity you are using to charge your vehicle? How much does your power bill go up in comparison? Is it more cost effective to pay the electric bill vice paying for gas for my car? There is always a trade off with any major change of technology. Who knows where technology will be in 10+ years.

I own a muscle car, until there is an affordable, comparable equivalent out there, I will not even consider buying an electric car.

I can't be the only one wondering how in the fuck they intend on enforcing this? They can't possibly tell people that they have to buy an electric car. I can't see them telling dealerships that they have to sell so many electric cars either. To me, this just seems like a giant fucking waste of time, as I never see it being enforced. Who is responsible for this quota? The consumers? The dealerships? The manufacturers?

Also:

"Early adopters (of electric cars) are willing to go without heat to save the miles they need to get to their destination, but that is not going to help grow the consumer base," Berg said, referring to the range issues with some current electric vehicles.

LOL. Going without heat just so you can actually make it to your destination? Wow.

These electric cars have a really, REALLY long way to go before they are viable for even half the current vehicle owners.

There are nearly 37 million people in the state of California (I dont know what the registered passanger vehicle numbers are though... I think it's around 26 million). You won't have to enforce anything. getting 1.5 million electric cars on the road isn't going to be that difficult of you make them more available and market them correctly and wisely (this is where a guy like Jobs would come in handy). I am sure throughout the state there are already easily over 1 million people who will be ready and wanting to purchase within a year (This is California remember). The others you can just fill the void by manicipal areas such as changing to electric buses (its done here easily and cheaply), bilaw vehicles going electric, event vehicles, etc etc etc etc the options there are many. No need for enforcement just good marketing and common sense. Those who need 10 ton diesel fueled trucks or vehicles used for industry etc etc aren't going to be manadated to purchase them.

I still think this is being seen as a consumer strangle hold which it is not. Perhaps if the mandate numbers were higher around the 5 million mark there would be more reason for concern. I just think at 1.5 million in a state of around 37 million people and 26 million registered passanger vehicles it's a none issue. It may be in certain areas with environmental and geographical challenges but I am sure their are stipulations protecting needs of those areas and maniciplaities. There often are in these sort of scenerios. I don't think a small blurb in news print really dives into the details of these sort of things.

Heat's not a concern in most areas of California Pez. Air conditioning on the other hand may be. I don't think much electricity is going to be burnt up worrying about heat in vehicles in California.

Bubble's questions are good ones and I am sure their is data out there somewhere on that. Both bias and non bias. If I really cared enough I would look fpr them (I probably will though).

I just want you guys to have to buy more electricity from us up North.

Holy shit, are you out of touch. Do you have any clue about the world outside the US? Or have all the hours watching Faux News rotted your brain with lies and falsehoods. What kind of world do you think is outside the US? What kind of country do you think Finland is? Some sort of communist regime with no freedoms? Please tell me, since you seem so sure about what sort of "bubble" I am living in.

So what exactly is so wrong about this? More cleaner cars! The horror!

THIS IS WHERE THE CONSTITUTION WOULD COME INTO PLAY. ITS CALLED STATES RIGHTS OK CALIFORNIA FOOLS YOU THINK THE ENVIRONMENT IS GOING IN THE SHITTER AND YOU WANT ELECTRIC CARS, GO RIGHT AHEAD. Yeah, this is where it starts. Where does it end though?

It's like the "temporary taxes".

Give them an inch and.....

Tater is right. Most of you are too young to remember when the first Illinois tollways were built.

The toll's were temporary until the bonds were paid off. Guess what?

They were paid off many moon's ago.

Once a government program is established, it rarely goes away. Rarely is being kind too.

lol. Its the same way people think about Canada. Don't worry bout what the socialist fear mongerers think about your country. We aren't the ones with debts we can't get out of and divisions throughout the entire country.

People still think Canada is a socialist country even though we have a conservative government that would make Regan blush. But we are doing pretty good in the big picture of global well being.

TCD..........it wasn't that long ago that today's USA resembled Canada and visa versa.

Studies indicate it costs more to run an electric car.

btw: Did you ever factor in the pollution it takes to produce the electricity for an electric car.

Opps forgot that part of the equation. Fetch me one of those der windmills Rosh.

I'm building me a wind farm in the back yard. I could use one as a ferris buehler wheel for the kiddies.

ohhh I agree. And our Conservative government is leading us right down the paths that have got you guys in the trouble you are in now. Trust me I know how simillar our politics are. The only huge difference btw Canada and the USA is population. And that's why we don't have political divides the way you guys do and why the problems wer get into can be managed wasier. We also don't lean on outdated legislation as much as you guys do . We have the common sense to amend what needs to be amended as to bring legislation up to date with social, cultural, technological and global changes. Hate to say it but you guys seem to get a little stuborn on that one. Your pop culture is amazing but a lot of your political culture is riddled in nonsense flag waving propoganda and based on cultural behaviors of those who used to light candles to find the path to the outhouse.

You really are a bunch of stuborn pridefull pricks sometimes. I love ya..truelly I do but you need to see a shrink USA. Get over some issues you have. It's as if Britian touched you in the no touch zone when you were young and now you are harbouring all this hate.

Canada has never been unstable as you guys are right now economically. Our dollar may have been low as hell at one point but that fueled a lot of our tourism economy and exports. Easier to manage a low dollar with a smaller co-operative population and a good relationship with China. Plus we have never had to deal with Mexico or put a lot of dollars into our military (which is about to change because you guys ain't protecting us anymore...but thanks for that while you were doing so..SUCKERS!!!!).

CANADA WINS!!!!

for now

our Priminister has beady Bush like eyes. We are fucked. I may move up and live with Nanook of the north. No way I am moving south I feel safer farting in a gasoline fire.

The studies I have been seeing online are saying that too but also the exact opposite. That powering certain electric cars would be cost equivilant of 50 cents a gallon (thats from a GM study). Have also seen numbers around $3.20 - $4.00 for 40 miles to 96 miles depending on geography etc etc. Battery costs is the biggest issue it appears everyone and every study agrees on that one and is the biggest kink in the whole ordeal.

Also seeing stats like 70% of vehicle owners only travell 40 klm a day. Then there are some data saying it's 40% who travell about 60 klm a day. So that's sort of up and down and everywhere also.

Bottom line is I have been looking at data and numbers for the last hour here on line and none of them are clear and I am getting mixed information left and right by special interest groups from the left and right sides of the political spectrum.

No one knows what the fuck they are talking about and they are just confusing the general population with all their bullshit and false numbers.

Fuck electric and fuck gas powered vehicles. Fuck California and fuck New York. Coast to coast everyone is being fucked up the ass by special interest groups and poorly put together bureaucratic agencies and their studies. It's obvious that the data and numbers being compiled by all these groups are simply being skewed and arranged to satisfy those who have already picked sides on the debate.

I give up. It appears that no one wants to do bi partisan legit studies on this shit or those that who do want to can't because of the road blocks. Good luck everyone. We live in a fucked up world and I hope we all grow fins and gills like Kevin Costner.

Legalize pot already. It's your only hope.

If it was 50 cents a mile, the Government wouldn't have to force people to buy them or "market" them. They would be flying off the lots.

No one is against the idea of electric cars, the technology just isn't there yet and people should have a choice.

Fuck electric cars, I still want a V8 that sucks gas like its going out of style and pushes 500 hp. It is the American way. I mean who doesn't want a bitchin' Camaro.

Also fuck electric cars, where the fuck are my flying cars we were supposed to have. Fuck Obama too, his fucking mileage standards. the Chevy Cruze is 1.4 liters. I have looked at that motor, I've seen bigger motors on leafblowers.
