If the Cubs did sign Gillick, having a new GM with no expierence, would be way better. But I still don't care if they signed Hahn with no guy like Gillick.

Gillick already said he is doing only 2 more years of baseball work.

Boston went out on a limb a few years back and signed a 28 year old Theo Epstein it worked out pretty well for them.

doesnt mean picking a young guy isnt a larger risk than a proven veteran GM tho...

Even so...2 years can get this franchise back on the right trade and Hahn can have a good advisor to get his show running.

ramirez,pena,byrd stink?

offensively we are right around average so i wouldnt say our lineup stinks

3rd in batting average(damn RISP),5th in slugging,7th in ops in the NL

our lineup isnt the big issue..its injuries and pitching

could our offense be better? ya definitely..but it certainly isnt bad

Yeah that's what I've been sayin', I don't think the Cubs O is really that bad (besides hitting w/risp). If the Cubs didn't have to trot Lopez, Russell Bush and sometimes Wells out there...it would be a complete different story.

If you were looking to advance as an assistant GM... which would you do? Take the job that you know is available now? Or would you wait and see if your current boss gets fired (as has been predicted each of the past 3 years... and hasn't happened)?

I mean, you can remain loyal, and end up waiting for another couple of years since Williams is still there. You can also move to the north side of town and take the hot seat of the media focus for your first actual GM job... but have the job right away (if it's offered to you). If you remain loyal, you can miss your chance at advancing. If you take the early advancement, you could miss your chance at moving up with the team you've been with.

You make some good points, but you forget Hahn is considered the top candidate to be a GM. He could take the Cubs' job, wait for KW to get canned or step down (my and many other Sox fans' preferred choice, obviously), or stay in his position and wait for another team's GM spot to open.

I'd put Friedman first, then Hahn 2nd.

I agree I really think it will be Friedman's job if he wants it. He has all the qualitys Ricketts said he wants in a GM. I really want Friedman we need a guy who is good in the draft and has good player development track record.

Catch me up to speed, please. Why is Friedman on the "list?"

Have you seen the Rays? He turned them from a worst to first team. He was Executive of the Year in 08. He also built that Rays team from within which is exactly what Ricketts wants to do.

I thought the Ricketts according to you wanted to spend a lot of money on some big name FAs.

ricketts did invest 12 million in international prospects as well as having solidified our farm system

but just because ricketts is investing a little in the farm system doesnt mean he wont be looking to spend a little in free agency either

Ok, so with your statement, you are putting him on your "unrealistic dream" list or is there any credence to the implication he wants out of Tampa to take a different lateral position?

Lateral move? The Cubs job is widely considered the best job in baseball and every GM would be interested and he fits the mold to a T the the Ricketts want.

Well his contract is up at the end of the year and the Rays dropped about 30 million in payroll from last year, so those two things could lead to him not wanting to resign, in which case, I think the Cubs would be all over him.
