Listen to this he thinks every GM would be interested
MLB Video - MLB - FOX Sports on MSN

again he talks about how it is the best job in baseball

"this is one of the prime jobs in baseball if not the best in baseball" (a rival GM said this)

"the Cubs will have the pick of the litter"
MLB Video - MLB - FOX Sports on MSN

I agree with him if a GM comes to chicago and wins a WS he becomes a legend. It also is the #1 dream job for most it is defiantly a top 3 job in baseball.

It's not going to happen, but, could you imagine the prestige Epstein would gain if he came here to Chicago and formed a team that won a World Series in the next 3-4 years? This after putting together the team that finally got a ring for Boston. He'd be the MLB Curse Breaker! the guy that broke both the Babe Ruth Curse and the Billy Goat Curse. It would also no doubt make him a Hall of Fame Executive... before he reached his 40s.

Personally, if I were a GM free agent right now... and ALL teams had open GM spots open... I'd rank my top 5 preferences for a career path as this (and why):

1. Yankees (As much cash as you could ever need to put as many great players on the field as you can. Largest market in the world. Biggest media coverage provides more popularity to the team. Recent movement within the organization to not trade away young talent for next to nothing. Younger Steinbrenners easier to work with than George. 2nd largest fanbase of all professional sports teams in the world.)

2. Red Sox (Getting to the point of having an open wallet for payroll like the Yankees. Top 3 fanbase in the MLB - possibly the most loyal and 'rabid'. Fanbase is still hungry for more titles, and constantly in competition with the big dawgs in NY. Biggest movement amongst top franchises of developing form within. A fanbase that would turn you into a God for winning them a title or 3.)

3. Philadelphia (Enough revenue now to put together a roster that can easily compete with the bigger spenders.. and revenue is increasing. New focus on bringing in topnotch players through FA and trades. Still heavily focused on developing topnotch talent through the farm system. Large market with a MASSIVE percentage of rabid sports fans that support the local teams.)

4. LA Angels (Becoming big spenders, showing they are willing to overspend to bring in strong talent. 2nd largest market in the nation, and their in-market rival is declining due to embarrassing owner drama and desperation. A market that will provide you with anything you need revenue-wise as long as you put a competitive team on the field. Located in a region -Southern California- where baseball is still king to young boys. A farm system that is becoming well known for developing strong talent with pitching and catching. Possibly the best manager in all of baseball...with an incredible amount of loyalty to your organization.)

5. Chicago Cubs (3rd largest sports market in the world. An incredibly loyal fanbase. Shown an ability to spend money like water a times. New owner that has proven his desire to build up from within. Top 3 scouting directors in the league, which will only improve scouting abilities as more money is put into player development. The fanbase is so starved for a championship that if you put together a team that would win one, you'd have a job for life no matter how well you do after that. third most popular marketing franchise in the MLB top 10 in all professional sports in the world.)

That's my top 5. To be honest, if the Mets and Dodgers weren't having financial issues with their ownership... I'd rank them higher than the Cubs as well.

Philly spends more than Boston does... #2 payroll in the majors the past 2 years. The Angels are also way up there too... and are rising. They don't have the debt the Cubs do either. Nor do those teams have too little payroll room to maneuver around mistakes like... Alfonso Soriano's contract.

LAA has some pretty bad contracts too. Vernon Wells is making Alfonso Soriano look like a pretty decent contract right now since he has a .201/.234/..356 slash line while earning 23 million this year, did I mention how awesome Toronto's GM is recently?

Every team with $100MM + payroll is going to have a bad contract or two. It's whether or not those bad contracts keep you from putting as strong of a team on the field as possible that's the issue. The contracts of Soriano, Fuki, Zambo, and Bradley/Silva certainly have done that the past couple of seasons for the Cubs.

The Angels, despite the bad contracts of Wells and Hunter are in the AL West race with a decent shot of overcoming the Rangers. I'd also call the contract the Yankees gave Jeter a very bad one, for he's not nearly worth $15MM + anymore, and hasn't been for a while. Boston just made Carl Crawford the most overpaid player in baseball... while Drew making $14MM and paying through the nose for Dice-K. Philly, you can say they overpaid Ibanez. Blanton is another bad contract for them... but they have been better at avoiding the bad ones than most other teams.

Jthe reason LAA is in it is because they developed some great pitching. I was just pointing out that the Angels have a contract at least as bad as Soriano and this is the first time their payroll. Is above 120 million.
