I'd like to see Makorov first, but it would be interesting to see Beach. Would'nt Beach put us over the cap?
I'm pretty sure the salary cap works on a daily basis. In other words - a player's salary cap hit divided by the number of days in the regular season (approximately 200 days) is the player's daily salary and that amount is charged to the team for each day he is on the roster. If a player spends the entire season on the roster - then obviously his entire annual salary cap hit is charged to the team. However, if the player is on the roster for only 14 days, then only the player's daily salary times 14 would be charged to the team.
So, using ballpark figures - Beach's salary cap hit is $1.1M. Divide that by 200 and Beach's daily salary is $5,500. Therefore, if Beach spent 14 days on the Hawks roster - it would use $77,000 out of the team's salary cap (5,500 x 14). Admitedly that is an over simplification because Beach is on an ELC and a portion of that salary cap hit is set aside for bonuses he may make, where if he doesn't make those bonuses, he doesn't earn that part of the salary and then those amounts are not charged to the team.
Makarov's salary cap hit is about half of Beach's - so if Makarov is called up to replace Hossa for a couple weeks, it will cost the Hawks $38,500 against the cap ($550,000 / 200 x 14).
In either case - I'm pretty sure the Hawks can handle the salary cap hit for such a short term.
