WTF. Did he or did he not get on the NFL coaching start here in Chicago?

And BTW, since you published his Wikipedia, you left out his stint on broadway.
He did not. He is just a name in one of their diversity books, they pull out when they need a minority.

Do you not know what the purpose of the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching fellowship is?

Let me help you: it ain't a list of names in a book.

It provides coaching experience.

Established in 1987, the Bill Walsh NFL Diversity Coaching Fellowship provides NFL coaching experience to a diverse group of participants every year.

He participated in Chicago.

Yes, I know exactly what the Bill Walsh NFL Diversity Fellowship program is. I give you a link if you want to sign up. Eddie George went to it for the bear during the OTAs this last offseason, after he was already a HC for Tennessee State. So, yeah he probably used money that was earmarked for the university to attend the program, but that not like the bears gave him his start at coaching.

Here’s the link https://operations.nfl.com/media/rfbjqmq1/bill-walsh-diversity-coaching-fellowship-flyer.pdf

So he interviewed for nfl jobs before that?

If not, then that's why they had his name.

Yes, that’s right! I am not sure what you are missing here? I don’t believe that he ever had an actual NFL coaching interest before. The bears had his name because of the diversity program that he and other minorities attended. When they needed the RR interview they just had to simply open the file of who attended and call them. George was willing to jump on a plane and help them, so they could send the offer letter to their real candidate.

I mean good for Eddie George maybe in a year or two he becomes a quality control guy or even a runs back coach. After 10 years of cutting his teeth maybe he’ll actually be in a coordinator position well he’ll be in the 60s?

It almost sounds like we are saying the same thing in different ways.

The bears were aware of him due to the program.

They didn't expect Detroit to be bounced from the playoffs so soon.

When it happened they needed a second Rooney candidate so it was EG who participated in the Fellowship here.

Not sure why there was such a freak out when it happened.

Bears got who they wanted. People should be happy.

I think most people including myself are happy with the hire, I think you should be happy to.

If the question is am I happy that we have a token black guy to satisfy the RR, then I am not sure.

Do I like the idea of Rooney rule? Yes
Do I like the current rules and the way the owners are abiding by them? Hell NO!
Should it be revised? Absolutely

What’s there to be mad about? He knew he was not going to be hired. He got a free trip to Chicago, 5 star hotel and world class dining paid for. MORE IMPORTANTLY he is now on the radar. He becomes a name to be considered for NFL jobs moving forward whether it be coordinator or head coaching jobs.

This was step 1 — get your name out there — get on the NFL radar. Step 2 will likely be next year when he throws his hat in the ring for an NFL job opening — coordinator job most likely — and who knows, maybe on a guy like Deion’s staff… or whomever.

Gotta get on the radar first though —- mission accomplished on achieving that.

It's a troll like trap designed to ignite a discussion about the Rooney Rule and race. It would appear that the hope is to catch someone slipping and then blast them as a racist. Winner gets a golden keyboard and wins the internet for a day.
People are certainly all worked up about it

I don't believe Eddie is just some token.

And I doubt he feels that way either.

Again, he's only 4 years into his coaching career.

What circles do you think he runs in? Pretty sure if a 7 year old girl knows who Eddie George is, then football coaches know who Eddie George is.

What do you do for a living?
Runs in circles that don't have him in the NFL...and getting the opportunity just to go through the process is good exp and puts his name out there...word of mouth. "Hey, Eddie George, did great in interview...he was impressive." Word travels
[/QUOTE]

He spoke so well...

I guess we found the racist. Nothing gets by you!

But hey, you got your name out there. That's what this is all about. Networking and such.

His profile is elevated just for getting an interview with the Bears. It was good practice for his next interview. This is a good thing and some of the indirect but intended benefits of the rooney rule

It's called doing a friend a favor. He was happy to do it for a staff he knew was not diversity impaired and enjoyed his time with. Also got some intel on the process of getting an NFL gig. Probably had a great time with lots of smiles but this righteous board got offended. Oh my! 😲

Everyone in the league knows the Bear no longer see color and why there won't be a peep over it among actual staffs or hierarchy. Their sights were obviously set on one guy for months (maybe before midseason) and they brought in 2 willing friends to fulfill a requirement.

So much indignation about nothing.

Almost like the Rooney Rule is a well-meaning, really dumb rule.

It's not perfect, but sports is the ultimate meritocracy, probably moreso than any other industry on earth as it relates to equality.

There's way too much money not to just hire the best damn, coach, coordinator, GM, quarterback, tight end, pass rusher, that you can regardless of race, religion or creed.

The Rooney Rule forces teams to jerk around minority candidates who have no shot of getting the job because they're not ready.

And if you're a minority candidate, OF COURSE you're going to take the interview. You have to believe that anything can happen and maybe you can convince them in the interview process. But how often does that actually happen? More likely, you're going to be passed around the league as the Rooney candidate cycle after cycle like a piece of meat, not because GMs are gigantic assholes, but because GMs are forced by league rules to do so.

Yeah, I mean, this is the pro-side, right?

You're not wrong. There are pros & cons. This is a pro. Are the cons greater, though? And does the scenario you outlined actually happen? Like, do we have any evidence that candidates who are interviewed purely to fulfill the Rooney Rule go on to success because of their exposure and interview experience? I have no idea what the answer is, I don't mind saying.

I think you guys are focused on the guys not ready vs the guys who the Rooney rule helped prepare.

Ryan Poles was not an obvious choice. Mike Borgonzi who just got the Titans job was 2nd in command in KC and Poles has explained in the past how past interviews with teams like the Panthers helped prepare him.

Homles was not even on the Lions radar when they started their search. It is possible if not for the Rooney Rule the Lions would not have found him.

The Rooney Rule isnt about a guy getting the job the first time he interviews. It is about a guy networking with key decision makers and getting exposure that helps them in the future.
