No, he's right. I'm literally a cuck because instead of applying for a bunch of loans and defaulting on them I went after the grant money and wrote some essays.

Yes thats right. Now i remember my daughter had to write some essays.

I would be a diesel mechanic or carpenter like Jesus.

My dad worked for Metra since it began, and retired a few years ago. I figure I could have been put in a decent placement and been pretty set if I chose that 18 years ago.

Hell with the trades, they killed my body. I'm a big handsome man. I should have been a gigolo for some rich gold coast woman.

$0.0 My parents gave me 2 years, that got my foot in the door at a company that paid for my engineering degree, in fact they paid me to get a degree.

I wish I was smart enough to be an engineer.

90% or roughly halve of engineers are narrow focused smart, you get them IRL and it is just sad. How smart are we anyway, fucking business majors make more than we do, Eng. is one of the lowest returns on education dollars spent, at least it used to be. I'm not including obviously useless shit like Theology, Philosophy, or 19th Century French Poetry.

College is not career training. The goal is still education, a broader world view, and exposure to an international community that for a brief period, voluntarily dedicates their life to learning. Its a pretty special space imo, one that is not really replicated anywhere else in our society. However, it is also still a generally worthwhile investment from a financial perspective.

That said, most things you gain in college can be found in other ways. But almost nobody actually does it. Its the same reason pro athletes need coaches to perform at their highest level. A community of people with similar goals and professors that streamline learning and hold you accountable will usually result in much higher success.

In terms of advice, for getting into first pick colleges, schools now aren't all that impressed with grades. They are more interested in kids that have shown evidence of developing and pursuing specific interests at a high level. Sports, computers, science, the arts, anything really. They want to see kids that are excited about something and are active engaged in it.

Same goes for scholarships. Don't get hung up on sports. There is a scholarship for everything. Push the kids to find something they are interested in and then push them to pursue it and follow through. Its often way easier to get scholarships for weird random shit.

In terms of purely career considerations, college is one avenue among many. I would argue that the non-career related benefits of college are the main point, but whatever. For pure career focus there are a lot of options that don't require college.

In terms of employment, a degree means that you did something difficult for 4 years and finished. That means a lot, but beyond that nobody really cares about your degree. Everyone knows that whatever you studied, they still are gon have to train you the same as everybody else.

Kids have it so much worse today than when I grew up regarding college

I paid $15,000 for 4 years of a private college. I paid for it myself as I had a fulltime job while going fulltime to school. I didnt sleep much

I paid a total of $80,000 for may daughters college education. I invested $20,000 in the stock market and 6 years later I had the $80,000
