TOKYO, March 11 (Reuters) - The biggest earthquake to hit Japan in 140 years struck the northeast coast on Friday, triggering a 10-metre tsunami that swept away everything in its path, including houses, cars and farm buildings on fire.

* At least six people were killed, five in Fukushima prefecture north of the capital, Tokyo, where four million homes were without power, and one in eastern Tochigi prefecture, media said. A hotel collapsed in the city of Sendai and people were feared buried in the rubble.

* The 8.9 magnitude quake caused many injuries, public broadcaster NHK said, sparked fires and the wall of water, prompting warnings to people to move to higher ground in coastal areas.

* The Philippines, Taiwan and Indonesia all issued tsunami alerts, reviving memories of the giant tsunami which struck Asia in 2004. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued alerts for countries to the west and across the Pacfici as far away as Colombia and Peru.

* There were several strong aftershocks. In Tokyo, buildings shook violently. An oil refinery near the city was on fire, with dozens of storage tanks under threat.

Tsunami warning issued for Hawaii, Pacific :

HONOLULU — The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii has widened its tsunami warning to include Hawaii and the rest of the Pacific Ocean, while a watch notice was issued for west coast of the U.S.

Sirens were sounded in Honolulu shortly after the warning was issued Thursday at 9:31 p.m. Haiwaii time.

The warning follows a massive earthquake that has struck off the northeastern coast of Japan.

It says the estimated earliest arrival in Hawaii of the first tsunami wave is 2:59 a.m. local time time Friday (7:59 a.m. ET).

"A tsunami has been generated that could cause damage along the coastlines of all islands in the state of Hawaii," the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center's bulletin said. "Urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property."

A tsunami watch was also issued for the coasts of Oregon, Washington and California as well as parts of Alaska, The Oregonian newspaper reported. The paper said any wave which reached the coast could hit just before 7:30 a.m. local time Friday.

The warning also includes Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and Central and South America. The coast of North America is not included in the warning.

Tsunami warnings are issued due to the imminent threat of a tsunami.

Uptown baby!
Devastating news to wake up to this morning, just devastating. Horrible. 8.9 on the Richter scale is unimaginable and even the 20+ aftershocks have been registering over 6 and 7 on the Richter. THEN you throw in the tsunamis. This is going to be a weekend and coming week full of nothing but tragic news from the Pacific rim.

Damn it!

My little bro who is in the Army and stationed in Hawaii is on vacation in Tokyo! They arrived last night and were

in a subway tunnel when it hit. So far, he is okay but we have not directly communicated with him yet.

Fifth worst earthquake globally ever.

I am seeing that as well but the flooding is crazy from the tsunami's generated. Narita Airport (outside Tokyo on coast) is under water.

For those that care (probably none of you), I'm fine and anyone I know is out of any Tsunami danger.

That being said though, I think this incident fully illustrates that the planet is still in charge of things and can wipe us out if so desired.

Of course we care. You are the first thing I thought of when I heard Oregon might have a Tsunami. Glad you're OK, Hun. You know we adore you.

Fixed!

It's not like it's some massive tsunami that's hitting the west coast... talk about complete overhype by the media.

And of course I'm joking TCD.

The images of debris-ridden water flowing over fields and houses was disturbing. Tsunamis are some devastating shit. I wonder what the death toll will be once they get to the hardest hit areas in the northeast. Luckily the Japanese know their shit about earthquakes and have plans and safeguards to see that they can keep casualties to a minimum.

Well, for Port Orford, OR, the Tsunami amplitude was 6.1 feet high. It's considerable--especially for beachfront property, but it's not the massive 100' tidal wave that some would think it would be.

Honestly, In my area I'm about 60 miles as the crof flies from the coast, and not too near any major rivers, so, unless the chaos gods were angry with me, the chance I'd be drying out this weekend would be slim.

Olympia-north I'd be more worried about because the straight of Juan de Fuca is massive enough to funnel a tsunami wave into the Puget Sound and up north towards Vancouver BC. and have far more chances of node/antinode formation. But my bro and everyone else lives far enough inland on a big hill and nowhere near a massive river.
