ding ding ding, we have a winner here. There was minimal damage to the plants themselves. It was the loss of electricity and all back-ups to the cooling systems which has caused this other mayhem, steam pressure to build so on and so forth.

The thing that all these news reports are not saying is the type of radiation that has been released into the air. High levels/low levels of the different types of isotopes mean different things.

Ding ding ding! We have another winner. There are all sorts of radiation surrounding us on a daily basis and much of it is not "bad" stuff. Just like the radiation that is being released in Japan right now, different types don't neccessarily mean you'll grow a third arm and have glowing kids.

Or in Jako's case make your dick bigger.

Jesus, hadn't realized the toll was that high... I thought it was bad at 3k but it keeps getting worse.

Badass of the Week - Godzilla

exerpt:

Another sweet thing is that Godzilla is completely unpredictable, and as such represents the Ultimate Duality of Awesome: When he leaves the warm beaches of Monster Island and emerges from the dark waters near the Japanese coastline you don’t know if he’s there to smash orphanages or save the universe from a rampaging giant space monster who shoots lasers out of his forehead and spits acid on hot Japanese babes. That’s just how he rolls. One minute he’s Earth’s savior, the next minute he’s grabbing handfuls of cheering humans and grinding them between his massive pointy teeth.

Japanese kids and people practice earthquake drills like we practice fire drills. Very often. Probably why the death toll isn't higher.

And they have really strict building codes which probably saved a lot of people.

True Mike. To make up for my lack of seriousness on my last post, the death toll is now near 6000 with 10000 missing. I hope it doesn't turn out to be worse than that. Lucky that this 9.0 killed so "few" (we'll see after nuke stuff I guess) after 9.3 in 2004 killed 230k.

Best of luck to Japan.

Where have you seen the reports that dangerous levels of radiation would have gotten to a larger population? My understanding is that the worst radiation contamination is still localized to the immediate area around the nuclear plant and the current exclusion zone is large enough to minimize any extra radiation exposure to the civilians.

The international media has been awful in providing accurate information of the situation and has for the most part gone the sensationalist route. And we'll probably wont have any accurate information about the extent of the radiation contamination until they have gotten the problems at the plant sorted out and the progress of that is getting conflicted and confusing reporting.

I guess it's just wait and see and hope for the best, but I do doubt this will end up being a catastrophe of the Chernobyl scale with widespread radiation contamination, this with the information that we currently have, things can always become worse.

The crazy think about earthquake is the completely ridiculous mathematics that goes into it.

A 6.6 (san francisco 1971) is 220 kilotons of TNT

A 7.2 is about 1.3 megatons of TNT

A 7.7 is about 8.8 megatons of TNT

A 8.0 is about 15 megatons of TNT

A 8.5 is about 167 megatons of TNT

A 9.0 (japan) is 474 megatons of TNT

So thinking that a 4.5 is half as bad as a 9 (which is what a normal person would think) is completely wrong. It's scary to think about. So if a nuclear power plant can withstand a 9.0. I'm sure Illinois power plants could withstand a 6.

It is mind-blowing. No TNT pun intended.

They just said on TV that a couple of the workers at the nuclear plant were exposed to 10,000 times the safe limit of radiation.

Sir Mike:

The richter scale is logarhithmic. As such, a 9 it's more like about 50,000 times more powerful than a 4.5, not twice, as you pointed out that people mistakenly think.

He're something else to consider:

Oklo Natural Nuclear Reactor

In over 2 billion years, nuclear byproducts travelled only about 2cm (the fact is referenced). Now, one would have to look at the soils of Japan and the faulting and whatnot, but it is worth consideration.

Title of this thread has to sadly be change. I was disgusted looking at the cover of the WSJ today to see not a mention of the devastation in Japan with it being reported now that as many as 29,000 are still missing and the number keeps rising. But thank god they had that story on Fake Zippo's and how Bippo's are affecting their company.
