Nagy was starting to believe his own press about his genius. Last year Nagy routinely abandoned the run and mismanaged his personnel. Most just overlooked it because we kept winning and as a result, Nagy was never forced to actually fix these issues. This loss occurred early in the season in front of the whole world and as a result I think Nagy will be forced to address these glaring issues that he otherwise would have allowed to linger while homer Bear fans praised him and complained about anyone being critical of him. Those issues are as follows:
1. Run Game - What we saw yesterday is what Nagy wants from his offense. Versatile RBs so he can use short passes in lieu of runs because deep down he doesn't like running. If we had won yesterday Nagy would have continued to throw to RBs in lieu of running only for it to backfire on us in a critical moment. Consider that more passes were thrown to RBs (ie 16) than rushes (12). This is the price of having a versatile back in Nagy's offense. Everyone talked about how Howard was a relic of the past but that relic forced Nagy to run. If his grand experiment had worked last night, he would surely have continued to minimize the run. Now after this embarrassment, there is hope he recommits to the run and maybe Bears fans will understand that there is a role for a more traditional RB if only to keep the pass happy coach honest.
2. Smartest Guy in Room syndrome - Another element of Nagy's game is his penchant for trick plays, gadgets and the desire to outsmart the opponent. Sometimes you have to trust you guys to simply execute a standard play but far too often Nagy replaces trust in his places for thinking he can outsmart the opponent. This was no more apparent by the fact that the Packers were in nickel for damn near the entire game and Nagy still managed to call 48 runs and 12 rushes. We had sets that had 3 RBs and 2 TEs and the Pack still played nickel. And yet Nagy chose to eschew common sense which would dictate running in those formations because in his heart of heart he thinks he is smarter than everyone and so could still win by throwing into the strength of the D. Now he has egg on his face and perhaps will go with conventional wisdom next time.
3. I have so many toys that I don't know what to do with them - This is another Nagy hallmark. In many respects it worked quite a bit last year with all his personnel groupings but the Bears are talented enough for their 3rd best RB, 4th best RB, and 5th or 6th best WR to consistently beat the other teams top guys. The fact that Davis and Patterson were allowed to play so much is a testament to Nagy's hubris. The fact that Davis played 40 fucking snaps and Patterson 20 is damn near criminal. Monty meanwhile played 27 snaps. Listen Nagy, this is the NFL. Teams generally win by relying on their best players. Sure it is cool and cute to bring in your OL to catch a pass but the fact this bozo thought moving Sowell to TE full time was smart just goes to show his infatuation with his toys and that infatuation blew up in his face with the useless Patterson and the boring Davis.
4. The Parkey Factor - Perhaps the biggest play of the season will be the disaster that was the 4th and 10 play. If Eddy has any balls, he would walk into Nagy's office and tell him that if Nagy ever pulls that shit again, he won't have to cut Eddy because he will quit the team right after kicking Nagy in the ass. We get it last year's loss was tough but Nagy has turned into a coward when it comes to the kicking game. The 8 player tryout and the refusal to allow Pineiro to take standard kicks in preseason and now the regular season speaks of a man still suffering from PTSD from the Parkey mass. After the embarrassing 4th down play, hopefully Nagy mans the **** up and lets Pineiro sink or swim.
5. The Mitch factor - I am glad people saw the truth about Mitch which is that he still has a long ways to go. I think ultimately he will be fine over the course of the season just like last year but he too seemed to be starting to believe all the hype by irrational Bears, More importantly Nagy seemed to be believing too as how else do you explain throwing 45 times in a 10-3 game. This game is wake up call that Mitch needs to be managed because he is more Dak Prescott than he is Pat Mahommes right now. And you know what that is fine. You can win a lot of games with the Bears D, a focus on the run game and a QB that throws 20-25 times a game. Hopefully Nagy and fans got it out of their heads about the Bears running some new age pass happy offense with running backs sprinting down the field to catch passes instead of run the ball. What this team needs is something in the neighborhood of a 55-45 pass run ration not the 80-20 ratio last night.
