i barely slept last night in anticipation of this game tonight. I have this odd confidence that i never have as a sports fan and it's disconcerting. The fact that two teams that finished 1 game apart and were the 2nd and 3rd best records in baseball this year are playing for survival is maddening. That' said only a few years ago the cubs would already be at home. Still the thought that a loss tonight means a massive disappointment was not something i was prepared for in 2015. I was all about this being one year early, rookies don't win, blah, blah, blah. All of that shielded me from this awful, terrible, wonderful feeling of anticipation and the one thing most foreign to me as a sports fan and particularly as a cubs fan...hope. Yeah, that's all over with now. Not only do i hope they win, i think they'll win and that's the worst of all and yet, and yet if they win i can dig into these playoffs and be ready come what may. Expectations will ebb and wane but i'll be ok from a cubs fan mentality point of view. Ok, now bring on gerrit cole bring on jake arrieta, let's get this done. Go cubs!

I have always been of the mindset that your record is who you are so I say they were the 2nd and 3rd best teams in the game over a 162 game season. Minor quibble but still. If you don't by record the rest is opinion.

I get it. You opt for one opinion and that is ok

End of season record and a multiplier of opponents win percentage.

I dont off hand think that works. I took 4 teams 162-0 0-162 and two 81-81 teams. Its unbalanced. The 162 team gets a zero score while the two 81 teams get a 500.

Now say the perfect team got half its wins against the 500 teams. Theyd be at.333 and the mid 500 teams would still be at .500

I think the math is right unless it aint (yogi)

Well OK. However you want to take it. My feeling is that by taking the stance that record indicates how good you are takes opinion completely out of it. It's the only fact based comparison you can make without conjecture, speculation and making a case by other means. Record is an objective measure based on results. I'm that way in all sports. For instance I actually believe that the Pirates are a better team than the Cardinals but there is no objective measure to bear that out so it's strictly my opinion. Someone else may feel differently, Cardinals fans most likely, but the record is what it is and isn't open to debate.

Ok. It doesn't work for you. That's only how SOS actually works.

This is the perfect example of why I refuse to get into the semantics of best teams and best record. SOS should be taken into consideration and is factual when the data is compiled the right way but there will always be someone to argue with you. Until this morning I didn't think you could argue record but Brett has proven me wrong. ;)

Enough of all that though. Are we there yet?

did the astros party last night? I ask as it is the same for tonight's winner with the quick turn around you don't want a day to recover tomorrow before the next round starts.

We still need 403 or we ain't going to win. :( go cubbies!!!!

The record of one team does not correlate to a record of another because the competition isn't the same. That's why it's an opinion instead of a fact. There are other factors in there like health of teams when they play as a quick example, but I believe you get the gist.

But that is why it too is also flawed, right?

I mean you have Team A that beats B, C, and D and loses no games yet on SOS they are below Teams B and C that finished with a .500 record.

I think I've shown the flaw in using record.
