Need to play better D, and I am hopeful as the rotations get figured out, they will. But it dawned on me late in this game taht the scores this year are literally double those of the Bruce Weber era.

Grandison, at the 30 minute mark, with Illinois up 8, had played 10 minutes and was +19. Pretty, pretty, pretty good - and that's a guy who will barely show in tonight's box score.

Underwood is still trying to figure out rotations with all thesw new pieces. Once that happens and the defense gels, this is a very dangerous team

Pretty good. Ayo has a tough game, the team can’t buy a free throw and suffered through a 19-0 run, yet never really felt like they weren’t going to win.

NUrds shot 8% in the 2nd half! Loved the energy in the second half and the hands slapping the floor on defense.

2 for 24 is a stat line I have never seen for a major conference team (or any team) for an entire half.

Illini are the first team to trail by 15 at the half and win by 20 or more in 25 years. And the first team since 2003 to outscore a major conference opponent by 40 or more in a half.

Maybe he, and the team, collectively turned the corner?

Trent broke the zone with a 3 to to start the 2nd half run. Add an adjustment with the 4 against the NUrds Zone D. That enabled the ball to move all over against the zone and with Kofi bringing the attitude the 2nd half, the MildKitties had to go to man and don’t match up well against Illinois, especially when Illinois dials up the defense.

To put it another way, which may be specifically what you are wondering-Illinois is #5 on KenPom. 6 on O and 18 on D. When that goes against #60 (62 O/60 D) it isn’t really about NU falling apart as much as Illinois finally started being Illinois. It should have been a beat down from the get-go.

once Underwood gets this team to gel and figure out the correct substitutions/lineups--they will really take off ala last night. They didn't have much prep time in the off-season to practice together so it was a bit of a clusterfuck to begin the season against good teams. Expect more of this improved cohesive play as the season goes on--and it would help to improve the timeout usage ;)
