Is there a point in dorming at college/university if you don't party?

Honest question here, is there much of a point in living in a dorm/apartment at a college/university if you don't party and such?

The main point would obviously be to live closer to the school but aside from that is there any other reasons?

I'm asking this because I'm going to transfer from CC to some university next year. I'm just curious if I'm going to be making the right decision about this.

Some of the things you appreciate about living on campus long after the fact are things like autonomy...forced to grow up a bit (make your own decisions about food, do your own laundry, decide for yourself what time you need to be in, etc). If you're not looking to party, you may have a decent grasp on this stuff, anyway. But, perhaps you're the person that's NEVER gone against the grain growing up. Meeting new people and going to a concert or something may help broaden your horizons.

Point is, if you're still living at home, the amount of growing up you can do in a dorm or just out of your parent's home is pretty significant.

How long is your commute if you don't live on campus but live with your parents? The commute is a ***** and those extra minutes/hours of sleep you don't waste on the commute are pretty valuable, at least in my opinion. You can just lock your dormmates out of your room and wear some earplugs if you don't want to party

It's one of the best ways to meet new people, imo. For one year, it's a great experience and allows you to do things you'll never have the chance to do again.

However, if you're already a junior, I'd maybe look at getting an apartment with some people. Generally, being younger in the dorms is more conducive to making friends.

I had an apartment with some buddies throughout college. Dorms fucking suck, they aren't even fun to party in.

Living in the dorm is more conducive to "study groups" if you need the extra help, or are willing to help others that need yours. Plus, you'll probably make a friend or two that you'll stay in touch with and maybe make some useful connections.

Try the dorm thing, and then if it doesn't work out you can make like a library and book.

I would have serious concerns with living anywhere in the general proximity of any of you nutjobs.

I would recommend it, simply on the fact of meeting new people. Sure you could get a horrible roommate, but you may also get a great one. I was lucky had a good one and made a ton of new friends because of it. The commute, walking distance to anywhere on campus is nice. If you are like me you might even have girls that live across the hall. Very nice way to meet teh ladies. Stricter rules in a dorm but from what it sounds like you will not have issues in that department. Do it for one year, then find an apartment.

Well I originally planned on transferring to U of I-champaign and I had took classes based on their curriculum but I'm thinking about transferring somewhere else now in a Chicago school where I could commute there on a train and such.

I realized that there really isn't much of a point in living on-campus or going to a school far away if you aren't really going to bullshit and party and do whatever these clowns do these days.

I mean, I'm more than positive I could make friends commuting too, maybe not as easily, but it can still be done. It really isn't an excuse to live in a dorm or on campus to make friends when you can make them in any situation. Plus, I would be saving much more money living at home than living away as well.

The only benefit is the freedom, but is freedom really worth 10k+? I'm not sure.

I may consider going to a Chicago school such as DePaul, Loyola, UIC, whichever I end up choosing and eventually live the apartment life anyways (probably senior/last year). Plus, it's better since it's in the city of chicago opposed to the middle of no where in champaign.

You can make friends however you want. Networking is good. Plus if you make friends with folks who live closer to campus, that's like mooch-territory there for a place to crash and free snacks if you have a late night ;)

since this thread is about droming i have some questions... 1. is it possible for a freshman to have a single dorm? (i know this may depend on the school, but what would the average college have?) and 2. How long do you have to live in dorms at a school if you arent a commuter?

I suppose, but it'd defeat the whole experience IMO.

I know a local school requires students to live in a dorm for 1 year.
