Is there a point in dorming at college/university if you don't party?

I suppose, but it'd defeat the whole experience IMO.

I know a local school requires students to live in a dorm for 1 year.

i like my privacy  its not like i wouldnt meet people if i didnt have a roommate. i just wouldnt want to get stuck with a bad roomamte for a whole year

Well I originally planned on transferring to U of I-champaign and I had took classes based on their curriculum but I'm thinking about transferring somewhere else now in a Chicago school where I could commute there on a train and such.

the middle of no where in champaign.

Your first "sentence" tells me that the U of I might not be right for you, respectfully and what not.

Note; Champaign is the second most important city in Illinois; surrounded by corn instead of gunfire.

I realized that there really isn't much of a point in living on-campus or going to a school far away if you aren't really going to bullshit and party and do whatever these clowns do these days.

I mean, I'm more than positive I could make friends commuting too, maybe not as easily, but it can still be done. It really isn't an excuse to live in a dorm or on campus to make friends when you can make them in any situation. Plus, I would be saving much more money living at home than living away as well.

The only benefit is the freedom, but is freedom really worth 10k+? I'm not sure.

I may consider going to a Chicago school such as DePaul, Loyola, UIC, whichever I end up choosing and eventually live the apartment life anyways (probably senior/last year). Plus, it's better since it's in the city of chicago opposed to the middle of no where in champaign.

As someone who graduated from U of I, I can tell you Champaign-Urbana is pretty damned good as far as a college town. Remember it is only ~2 hours away from both Chicago and Indianapolis. As far as the kind of town Champaign is, you could do far worse for the size it is. Think about it, it has world class concert facilities (Krannert is as good as anything for bands of any type) including a large venue for big draws (Assembly Hall), great restaurants (Black Dog Smoke and Ale House, Blind Pig, Ko Fusion, etc.) not to mention the sheer number of girls there (it is extremely concentrated).

Really, it comes down to what you feel most comfortable with; if it's Chicago, that's great--I live in Chicago now, and it's the best city I've ever been in. You can't go wrong with either choice in my opinion.

Obviously, You have not been around. From a quality of life, traffic, taxes, congestion standpoint Chicago is a terrible city.

People live here because thier family is from Chicago or they are working here. No one from another city like Austin, SF, Charlotte, San Diego, etc ever said "hmmmm...let's leave this place and go live in Chicago".

People that live in Chicago are over the top in all thinks Chicago homer related.

You could always move into the girl's dorm, drill holes through the shower walls, and after you get caught, blame the women for spying on you and call the school sexist.

Again, I don't party and U of I is one of the bigger party schools correct? It seems like it's a bad fit for me which is why I'm strongly considering passing up the option to transfer there and transfer to a Chicago school instead.

since this thread is about droming i have some questions... 1. is it possible for a freshman to have a single dorm? (i know this may depend on the school, but what would the average college have?) and 2. How long do you have to live in dorms at a school if you arent a commuter?

most schools that i know of dont have that option, so you will probably have to have a roommate (its really not that bad(well most of the time it isnt, living with someone else is never easy thou)). most dorms have different types of rooms. My freshman year i lived in a Suite, basically two rooms connected by a bathroom in the middle. My sophmore year i moved into a more "apartment" style room. I still had 4 people in my room but we all had separate rooms and the apartment had two bathrooms, a kitchen and a living room we all shared. I liked that way better, but it also cost more money.

also most schools require you to live on campus for at least 1-2 years (you maybe able to get out of this with a doctors note) it really depends on the school though, contact the director of housing to find out all of this.

hope i answered your questions.... also ignore spelling grammar mistakes ive been drinking.

You don't actually have to party, y'know  If the school has a program that you like and think you can get a lot out of, the other stuff should be secondary. I'm sure if you make your intentions known without being a dick about it your dorm-mates will give you some space.

U of I is a fairly large party school (as far as opportunities to party); however, U of I (or any college) is whatever you want it to be. I didn't party my freshman year, and my brother (who is down there currently) doesn't party now. There are a lot of opportunities on campus from intramural sports to clubs, etc.--there is no reason you have to party (and there are plenty of people who don't). None of this is to say you should go to U of I if you're uncomfortable. The best advice I can give is to go where you're comfortable (no matter where it is)--it will make you more productive, etc.

I pretty much clarified that when I said "the best city I've ever been in" (though I've been in quite a few you didn't mention). Without going into detail, I can come up with quite a few reasons Chicago is great place to live (and beats out many that you listed). Why can I do that? Because it's subjective.

Your condescension is noted.

So you are considering DePaul and Loyola, yet you are hung up on the cost of a dorm or an on-campus apartment? Wow. If you went to Yale, would you refuse to buy textbooks because they are too expensive? I don't get it.

If you do the commuter thing, you'll never meet any new people, never make any job contacts, and will probably end up living at home for awhile even though you have a college degree.
Well I would get a lot of scholarships going to those schools, so the cost isn't as expensive as you would think. I am favoring Loyola over DePaul though....by a lot.

Then just do what you're comfortable with. The thing is that you should try to build as many networks as possible during your time in college anyway for lasting friendships and job-finding purposes anyway. You'll probably want to go to a few parties at some point despite yourself ;)

I wouldn't mind going to a party, just not one of those parties where these clowns go "rager!!!!" "we're raging!!!" Get those fucking clowns away from me.

I don't find anything fun about drinking piss and then hanging around a bunch of bandwagon/front-running clowns that smoke weed just because everyone else does. I'd like to become friends and hang around with people that are much better than that.

Chances are if I drink piss, I would do it at a bar rather than some stupid party.

I just transferred from a CC to Iowa State this fall. I live off-campus (1.5 miles away from the heart of campus) and live by myself. It's a lot quieter at my apt & complex than it is when I go over to friends dorms.

The benefits I see of living in a dorm is that it's a lot easier to meet people. Just because you're in a dorm doesn't mean you have to party lol. I don't have anyone else in my living area to 'bother' me (If I'm in a "do not disturb" type mood, which is rare), but I will say that it sucks at the same time living by yourself because you don't have anyone to talk to/hang with either.

Don't be anti-social & become a hermit. It's no fun. I don't really party anymore, but I still go out with people to bars & such and I'll just be the DD or the sober lookout lol.

Why won't I meet any new people? Because I don't party? Is that the only method of making friends in college? I'm pretty sure it isn't.

Yeah, not everyone in the dorm is a partier. You'll find a group that will just study and hang out and relax rather than poisoning themselves every night :D
