Whew. 4-1 after leaving the bases loaded, needing 9 outs from the pen, had me hoping we wouldn't regret those chances not taken advantage of.

Scoreless top of 7th and two insurance runs, and things look much safer. Cards also haven't cashed in.

6-1 lead the very last thing you want is to walk the first two batters. Just throw some strikes.

3 walks and a HBP. Both runs were the result of walks. How do you enter a game in the 8th inning with a 5 run lead and walk people?

One down. Two batters up before Goldschmidt.... and we walk one of them.

Just end it here with Goldschmidt. Remember, if he leans backward as the pitch comes in, it is automatically a ball.

I agree. Looking over the staff I was looking into SO% and BB%. I didn't believe having a high strike out rate was of vast importance. What stood out was the ratio from SO to BB.

Tepera holds a 42.4 SO%. 6.1 BB. 3.12 ERA and a 2.45 FIP. He is someone that you can lean on

Wick 24.2 and a 6.1 result 1.13 ERA.

Now there are 2 blips to this. Underwood and Ryan. Underwood I see as a learning curve. More so has control but needs to work on command. Ryan is a velocity issue but he still attacks the plate.

But in general if a pitcher is unproven and can't throw strikes he gets a yank into the reserves. Kimbrel also has this control issue but he makes too much $$$ to sit.

Even Sadler 17 BB and 23 SO %'s. Result has been around a 5 ERA. He wouldn't even be in the mix except for lack of quality in the pen.

I'm officially ready for Quintana to replace Mills in the rotation.
