Mills went in with a 4.14 FIP. He has to be on his game to win. Just with Lester I saw 2 guys that were over performing their capabilities.

I'm officially ready for Quintana to replace Mills in the rotation.

He is close. They were saying 1 more sim then insert into Chatwood's rotation spot. They can run a 4 man rotation with the schedule. Mills I see keeping his spot until Tyler returns.

But to be real Mills is fine in spot starts and as a long arm in the pen. On a shit ball team he would even be fine as a rotation piece.

Don’t you have to at least pretend to move out of the way of a pitch?

Makes you wonder if they send Alzolay back down or hold him and send down Hernán Pérez. I don't see the need for a extra 2B.

Listening to the radio broadcasts, Pat said Alzolay was clearly upset he did not make the team. Thought he threw better than guys they kept, had a chip on his shoulder. Ron chimes in saying you like guys like that on your roster.
My take, first chance he is free, he will look to go. Second, they signed quite a few "projects" that just had more of a track record for this sprint for the trophy.
Still like the 6 man rotation, still do not want them to sign a 30 million dollar guy when John leaves, and desperately need to end this crap of never developing pitching. Cant keep KB, Baez and Rizzo, let alone Contrares if they gotta pay big dollars for a reliever. Right now Chattys spot is open and Alzolay needs another go in 5 or 6 days.

Quintana

Alzolay
Mills
Rea
Underwood
Tepera
Jeffress
Wick
Kimbrel
Ryan

With a 28 man roster it is justified.

Getting Q and Chatwood off the DL is the first priority and keeps a few arms around that shouldn't be.

I would keep Alzolay in the rotation with Mills for now.

I believe that it had more to do with control. In a short season they would lose a year. And basically use him in the pen. Mills they don't view as a set piece and giving him time didn't matter.

They are losing Tyler and Q. It would make more sense for them to replace 1 spot with Zo and keep the service time.

Alzolay was right to be mad because it was a business decision in a short season.

So why are we talking about keeping a fifth second baseman?

We are getting used to seeing just about everything, but when Alzolay posted his wedding pictures from the off season and the cubs sites made a big deal out of it, it sure seemed like he expected to be here day 1.

So why are we talking about keeping a fifth second baseman?

Perez is more than just a second baseman, there were four games last year he played every position for the brewers except catcher. That is the only reason I can see keeping him, considering they probably do not plan to use Happ in the infield anymore. Thats the best I can come up with, I cannot see keeping Phegley either, finally got his first hit a home run, but sure seems that they should keep pitchers here so Ross can figure out who to trust. Those are two spots I see available of the 3 extra roster spots.

As far as Alzolay though, gotta keep him stretched out in the scrimmages in south bend for the spot start not put him in the pen and then have to stretch him out again. Problem with spot starts though is you never know when that is going to happen and whether it will be in the guys schedule
