28 games over. Season high

Huge series with the Cubs bringing out the brooms again, and to see the Cardinals falter at home yet again. The Cubs can put away the birds starting in 4 days or at least get a push and knock four more games off of the schedule.

I would love nothing better than the Cardinals not making the playoffs since I live in a Cardinal bragging city. It so nice to not hear them chirp. ;)

Sean Manaea went to my college, Indiana State University. We lived on the same floor our Freshman year of college, he was a really cool dude. I was happy that we got the win without absolutely bombing him haha

I liked him coming out the draft. He was considered a top pick and then fell. I cant remember if it was an injury or what, but I wanted him in the Cubs org.

I live south of Terre Haute in a heavily infested Cardinal nation. I like that Manaea came out of the Missouri Valley Conference and wish them all well........unless they are playing the Cubs of course.

I think scouts were wary because he had velocity in the mid 90's, and then for some reason, the next season was pitching mostly in the high 80's. He had a good build with some quirkiness in his delivery with if I remember, a 3/4 arm slot.

Yeah I joked with him one time in the lunchroom and said "Theo just called me, they're taking you" He laughed and said he hoped so because he's a Cubs fan.

And yeah, he was supposed to be a top 5 pick but he hid an injury that turned a lot of teams off

That's unfortunate that you live there haha. I lived in Terre Haute for 5 years for college and it was..... interesting. Certainly more safe than the South Side of Chicago (where I grew up), but there was meth heads galore in TH!

Another player to look out for is Dakota Bacus. He went to ISU as well. Like a 7th round pick of the Athletics, but then traded to the Nationals for Kurt Suzuki. I had a bunch of classes with Dakota and still talk to him from time to time. He's in AAA at the moment, I believe

He told me that the Oakland organization was kind of a joke. Didn't get into much detail but he didn't like it there much. He said the Nationals are much more professional

Maddon spoke very highly of the kid as well.

Well the .162 in AA did not seem to phase Soler. Hitting Lasers again.

Tommy LaStella still has not reported to Iowa, cubs still claim he was given extra time.

If the playoffs ended today, the Cubs would host either the Dodgers or Marlins after their WC game (and likely after Kershaw vs Fernandez) and the Giants/Nationals would have to play each other in round one. AKA that's a perfect setup for the Cubs.

Left-hander Brian Matusz cleared outright waivers and will remain with the Cubs organization after being designated for assignment on Aug. 1, tweets Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com. Matusz will return to Triple-A Iowa, where he pitched well before being promoted to make a spot start on the eve of the non-waiver trade deadline. Matusz was tagged for six runs in just three innings in his lone big league start with the Cubs but has compiled a 3.58 ERA with a 39-to-7 K/BB ratio in 27 1/3 minor league innings this season — including a 1.93 mark in 9 1/3 innings at the Triple-A level. Formerly a mainstay in the Orioles’ bullpen, Matusz has yielded 14 earned runs in a total of nine Major League innings this season.

Season's saved guys.

Given Zobrist's age and given the need to get playing time for all the younger guys, i wonder the cubs might give him say 2 days off a week instead of 1. Obviously you want him seeing enough time to be good to go bat wise for the playoffs but the cubs have a pretty sizable lead now and it seems like Baez/Soler and the various bench guys are going to need more time to get going themselves.

I remember Pinhead Pinella and some of Renteria almost taking credit for young players doing well because they were putting them in match ups where they would do well. So I would think there would be some worry about playing them too much. Remember last week Maddon mentioned, "I did not know Javy was an everyday player" when he left him out of the lineup during a hot streak. Pretty sure Maddon will keep his vets going more than the younger players. Nobody knows what the thought process was with all the outfielders anyway, since I count Bryant and Zobrist as an outfielder, but I guess best case would be start Ben somewhere and pull him after an at bat late in games.

It's not about starting Baez daily. It's about finding semi-regular playing time for everyone. If things mostly stand pat and you go with largely Soler in LF or Baez at 3B depending on the match up, then you're having Coghlan and Szczur rarely playing and you have to play Contreras at C to get him into the line up. By giving Zobrist some additional rest, you have the option of Baez or Coghlan at 2B(he played there last year). That in turn gives you only really 3 guys for LF(Soler/Contreras/Szczur). I'd be less worried overall about Szczur's time because he'll get days off from the other 2 OF but finding a good mix for Contreras/Soler/Baez and also giving Coghlan and Szczur enough at bats is going to be rather delicate.

Not a fan of Cog over LaStella. .295 vs .147 BA.

Just seems like they are justifying the Alcantara trade.

Add to it when Hammel comes off Bereavement they have to boot another off.

Baez has basically been a started since June. Even with players coming back, he is only sitting once every 5 or 6 games.

Well regardless, if it's cogs or la stella, that player needs more than just a PH every now and than.
