More great pitching....top to bottom. Reminds me a bit of last year when the pitchers carried things for awhile early. Need to get those bats going tomorrow.

Just got home from the game.

Not sure which was my favorite part - a) watching Heyward with the assist at home, as we were perfectly in line with him and home plate, and I called it before the catch. (It was Holliday. I know, I wasn't too far out on a limb.) or b) Listening to Mike Shannon yell "Yes!" on Yadi's HR that wasn't or c) watching Hammel drive in 2 as I predicted to my friend he would.

In the interest of full disclosure, I also incorrectly predicted a Carpenter HR to tie it and that the Cubs would score in the 9th to stretch the lead, but, close enough. 2 out of 4.

Hammel was good. He has been tough thus far this season. Hope he keeps it up longer than last year. I blamed his hammy for his slump in the 2nd half, but he never got back to his 1st half self. Hopefully, fully healthy this season, we'll see that he can. So far, so good.

Cub starters have allowed 2 runs in the last 4 games.

Cards fans keep talking about Cub pitching as though it is mediocre at best.

They feel they have the superior staff by some wide margin. Meanwhile so far (albeit in VERY early going) the Cards have scored the most runs in the league, and are .500. Their starters have had some good games, but have hardly been stoppers.

Offensively, they scored one run in two games, against our #3 and #4. Guess our staff is OK so far.

Man, for as ho hum as the cubs starters after Arrieta they are really good... Not including tonight they have a 2.18 ERA which is best in the majors, a 2.84 FIP(3rd best), a 1.97 bb/9(1st), and 8.31 k/9(11th).... er i should say that's with Arrieta but still even without him that's great.

Crazy to me to think that we are 11-3 and nobody outside of Fowler is swinging the bat well. It's been pretty much damn good pitching from the starters, taking a ton of walks and when the guys do get hits, they are usually big ones.

Hammel did it all for himself tonight, which is great to see from him.

Hope we keep this up! GO CUBS! #W

Nobody's swinging the bat well but Fowler in the last week or so. Prior to that they were. Fortunately the pitching has never faltered.

As for any STL fans thinking their pitching is better, that's just objectively not true as beckdawg mentioned. On top of those stats, the Cards staff has allowed 57 runs, and the Cubs staff only 32. STL is still a really dangerous team until proven otherwise. However if they do start sucking for real it will be amusing to watch their fans in denial about it for an extended period of time until finally they all realize their team now sucks. At least that's my dream... :smug2:

Oh, and we won so no harm no foul, but how about that plate ump calling all kinds of stuff way off the plate strikes for the Cubs? By the end of the game I felt like photoshopping together a collage of pitchtrax screens of balls he called strikes to send to him.

What's lacking in the pitching debate convo is team defense. The Cardinals defense does not match up with the Cubs defense. That helps a pitching staff greatly.

Absolutely. You can see it in the stats too. The Cardinals team ERA is 3.73 while their team FIP is 3.00. The Cubs are the reverse with the better ERA at 2.15 than FIP at 2.60. Heyward alone has made a huge difference in the defense.

I was just thinking about heyward and the influence on pitching staffs he has. made me think back to the game towards the end of the year against st Louis when heyward threw Rizzo out at the plate to keep the cards up a run and eventually won the game by the same 2 - 1 score that we won by yesterday with him making the big throw to keep a run off the board. its YUUUUUUUUGE to come out with W's instead of L's in those situations.

Today is when you make the difference between "winning the series" but allowing them to get back closer, and sweeping the series. Three games vs one game, especially early, would set such a different tone.

Get it done, boys.

Right now the Cub's pitchers are hitting .225 with 7 RBI after 14 games...a pace to total about 75 for the year.

Not too shabby.....
