When teams use pitchers as some sort of pinch hitter or pinch runner, it's not like Joe looks down at the end of the bench and yells "Kyle, grab a bat". Several innings before the situation, the bench coach is talking to Kyle about the possibility that if the game keeps going, he might be needed so he should get loose. Kyle then likely has to do some stretching (since you know, he pitched Sunday and the odds are he didn't do a ton of stretching and even if he did pre-game stretching, that's over 4 hours ago) and start getting some hacks in. THEN Kyle gets the call. In no situation are you going to ask Lester, if he even is still in the ballpark, to hit because he's your next day starter and if you have something go wrong, there's literally not enough time to correct it without moving Q up to short rest and that's not ideal either, all just to bat a guy with two out and no one on.
Just think guys, that's all it is.
