The Nationals have officially announced that they’ve released former closer Jonathan Papelbon, making him a free agent. The Nats had initially told Papelbon they intended to designate him for assignment, as Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post writes (Twitter links). Papelbon instead requested to be released, since the process of being designated for assignment could result in him being in DFA limbo for up to ten days. The Nationals agreed, although they waited for much of the day Saturday to make the move official. Papelbon’s release clears space for Reynaldo Lopez, who will start tonight against the Braves.

Basically he requested to be released. I got a feeling he will be a Cub

No way.

Why not? He is better than Smith. Add to it Rondon you don't know when he will be back and how effective.

Right now you have Edwards. And I just saw him ring up 4 walks in a inning. He is good but the bumps are in the road

Smith sucks but Papelbom is a cancer with the ability to destroy a club-house. Which might potentially be worth a risk if he was an elite bullpen guy still.

But his ERA is nearly 5.00 and his ability has declined dramatically.

Stay away.

First of all he has not been a issue sense that situation and Williams was a shit head of a manager and lost control of his players. That team sucked and these guys have pride.

Was is wrong? Ya seemed like a roid rage to me. But a guy getting on in years you never know.

My issue is his avg FB is at 90.5. Down from his 2011 peak of 95.5. For a power pitcher that is death. And if that is the reason I'm behind it. But not a deal that happened and the guys moved on. Shit happens and no need to carry a torch over it. These guys are adults and got over it.

I do not like it when the Cubs lose to the Cards.

The*Cubs*are a potential fit for free agent reliever*Jonathan Papelbon, whom the Nationals*released*Saturday,*per Bruce Levine of CBS Chicago. Team president Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer have an obvious familiarity with Papelbon from their days in Boston, where the executives signed and helped develop the right-hander, notes Levine. Moreover, although they had won 11 in a row before Saturday and are in possession of the majors’ best record (73-42), the Cubs do have some issues in the back of their bullpen. Excellent setup man*Pedro Strop*is on the shelf with a*torn meniscus; fellow shutdown option*Hector Rondon*has a strained right triceps;*Carl Edwards*Jr., who entered Saturday thriving, surrendered five earned runs on four walks in 2/3 of an inning during the team’s 8-4 loss to the Cardinals; and deadline acquisition*Joe Smith*has yielded three home runs in his first three innings as a Cub. That would be less alarming if not for his underwhelming 2016 performance as an Angel prior to the trade.

Plus he has familiarity with Lester and Ross..

No doubt he agrees with Cubs he knows Chapman the Man as closer..
I'm sure Epstein Hoyer and Maddon will tell him he will basically be replacing Strop as the 7th 8th inning guy and probably be counted on a bit more early on then Rondon til Rondon fully recovers..

Plus we don't know how Strop going to recover and how he will do right off the bat, when or If he returns towards end of September.. He might miss the NLDS if he not able to come back and pitch by the last week of season to get back in playing shape.

I just can't imagine the Cubs caring this little about chemistry that they would sign Papelbon. Chapman was one thing because he was the unquestioned closer and you also had to remember that your two rivals (Washington and San Francisco) wanted him so there was a little "get him to keep him from going there" going on where as Papelbon was literally just released by the Nationals. His average velocity is down around 91 as compared to 95 so even if you don't care about his chemistry issues, the arm isn't there either. He's a true stay away in both on field and off field.

I'd be shocked if the Cubs don't at least kick the Papelbon tires

not that I want him on the team

Would the Cubs be last on the waiver wire? I feel like a team would block them just to block them. I mean this is the best team in the league. People get weird with fucking with mojo.

I don't see the issue kicking the tires here. It comes down to Rondon's triceps. He takes a week you have to DL him and sign. Keeps some stability in the pen and lean on Grimm and Edwards more. See how it shakes out.

Cahill is a wild card. They might just get his start in and put him back into his old role last year.

One positive about Lackey on the hill tonight, it slightly diminishes my fear of the Cards retaliating for the Holliday incident. He will take somebodies fucking neck off.

Nah, they'll be pussies and get us in the last game of the series so we cant get them again until later in the season.

I would tend to agree, being the only game being played on sunday night and more fans than usual watching.

Rondon says he is good to go to pitch. Cardinals get an extremely lucky break. Stanton has been ruled out for the rest of the season.
