I prefer Baez coming up not only for potential offensively, but because he snd Russell in MI would make us very good defensively. That itself is huge.

I keep seeing people suggest this with regard to Baez and clearly there's something they see and I don't. It wouldn't shock me if Baez was average defensively but when we start talking about him being plus there I am not so sure. He has 12 errors in 25 games in AAA at SS. Last year he was better but still had 13 in 85 games which roughly puts him on a similar pace to what Castro has done in the majors over a 162 games. Overall, Baez has 92 errors in 354 games which breaks down to 44 over 162 games. Admittedly defense tends to improve as you move up the chain as some of the fields in the minors are dodgey compared to the majors. But that's still a rather huge number to work down from.

Even if you move him to 2B I'm not sure that makes him any better than Castro would be there and people tend to want to kill Castro defensively.

Maybe Baez is the answer in CF?

I do not want him at SS. He is too error prone. Russell should be long term there. I would be ok with 2B, 3B or CF. But outside of injury do not expect him on the team until the rosters expand. Hoyer already said that Coghlan will be used as 3B/2B depth when Montero gets back. Schwarber is higher on the food chain than Baez.

Maybe Baez is the answer in CF?

Possibly but just given the way positions tend to work I think you're going to have to find a lead off hitter out of CF similar to what they did with Fowler. If we can assume that Rizzo, Bryant Russell and someone like Castro/Baez are at 2B that doesn't typically leave you with many choices out of a lead off hitter as they tend to be CF/2B/SS types. There are obvious exceptions as someone like Brett Gardner plays primarily LF I believe and obviously Cogs probably could lead off. I suppose it's also possible you could have Russell lead off but I feel like he's more of a 2 hitter than a prototypical lead off guy.

I'm obviously not as high on Baez as many but if you're asking me how I see things playing out with him in the cubs picture it pretty much needs to be 2B/3B or maybe LF though I'd say that's a long shot given how Schwarber may see a lot of time there and he's proven far more in the majors thus far as a hitter. You could conceivably move Soler for something and push Bryant to RF with Baez at 3B or you could go with the common logic of him at 2B. I'd lean toward 2B more because I think Soler ultimately will be a better hitter but I'm just suggesting it as a possibility.

Overall, I don't want to come off like Baez would kill you at 2B because like I said I think he can be an average defender. I'm just saying I'm not really seeing him as much more than that as a middle infielder.

So.. the answer to what happens when Montero returns

Against RH.. Castro benched Cogs to 2B Schwarber to LF
Against LH.. Cogs and Schwarber benched Castro to SS

Cubs catching a break against the Giants. No Leake or Bum and Panik out. Panik makes that play.

LOL, WTF was Fowler doing? Solar ran over a 100 feet. You have to see that ball moving. He just gave up really early.

This isn't the best defensive unit we can put on the field.

2nd and 3rd, not outs. 2-4 up, this is where we need the middle of our line-up needs to come through
