So it seems they are going to push today. Bringing up Matesu vs Felix.

Matesu's avg 4 seemer is at 88. I'm a little weary
Maybe their showcasing him for a flip trade tomorrow

Think it's far more likely they want to see what he has before the end of the year in case they decide they want to re-sign him. Anyone in the majors could have had him for free earlier in the year if they wanted him.

If that the case, wouldn't it better to wait til Sept..
They are still in a division race to just give up a game to see what they got in a pitcher

Maybe but Maddon/FO seem to want a 6th starter to limit innings. So, if you're going that route anyways... why not? It's not like 1 start is suddenly going to sway other teams to pony up something worth while for him.

Also there's this...
He has an out in his contract with the Cubs, and the team needed to decide by Tuesday whether to add him to the major league roster.

Just saw that last part...
Mentions that and also audition for both cubs and other teams..

@Buster_ESPN: In a time of the year when small sample size can mean everything, Cubs give Brian Matusz 1-night industry audition. es.pn/2aCMqR5

If Cubs add him to roster
Thing is though, unless there other deals involving pitchers
Who gets moved ? Edward's ? Cahill due back soon

Wait..is 40 man considered major league roster?

I assume 25 man is what they meant and they already added him by calling him up to pitch today. As for how everything fits together, they sent down Grimm. They can fairly reliably keep him on for the next month or so and then rosters expand to 40 and it's less of a concern because Grimm, La Stella and anyone else on the 40 man roster can be called up.

With that being said, if the cubs can get something for him then I'm sure they'd listen but I'm not sure anyones giving them even a fringy prospect for him.

If he's ready, he's got a strange way of showing it. He's been getting torched in Iowa.

To expand upon no one wanting to give up much for Matusz, before he signed with the cubs he was a reliever with Balitmore. To get rid of him they dealt a 2016 competitive balance round B(pick 76) for Brandon Barker and Trevor Belicek. The O's have a very weak farm system and neither of those two are even in their top 30 prospects. Now, maybe the cubs have "fixed" Matusz like they did with Arrieta. I think he may actually pitch well tonight but that trade goes to show you what the rest of the league thought of him in May.

Who knows..
Just don't see a need for a 4th LH reliever
So unless their going with a straight 6 man rotation now.
Have to think after the cubs suggestion and his 2 very good starts in Iowa where he went 9 ip 3 bb 11 k and 2 ER
This is basically an audition for him against a major league team, perhaps for a team that might be interested in letting him start the rest of year..

If not, unless he agrees to a minor league stint til Sept
I just don't see them keeping a 4th LH in pen now

Maybe they might move Montgomery for him..

If you were going to make this trade play, I think the guy you'd dangle would be Hammel. It's well known the cubs want to add a younger starter. As of today, unless they buy out Hammel's $10 mil year next year they have 5 guys. And at $10 mil for the way he's pitched the past 3 years Hammel is a bargain so buying him out seems odd. If Cashner and his 4.76 ERA is worth(along with Tayron Guerrero(4.50 ERA), Colin Rea(4.82 ERA)) Luis Castillo(50 grade prospect), Josh Naylor (50 grade prospect), Carter Capps(16.84 k/9 2.03 bb/9 1.16 ERA reliever) and Jarred Cosart(5.95 ERA reliever) then what's Hammel(3.23 ERA) worth?

Sure trading Hammel would probably screw with your options down the stretch but he is their #5 starter and he wont be pitching in the playoffs other than relieving. And presumably the cubs are trying to deal for a young starter right now. If you could swing Hammel into a couple of decent prospects and in turn swing those into a young starter, Matusz could work out of the #5 slot(or the young starter depending on who it is).

That a possibility too...

I just don't think Epstein done...
Got to be another deal or two in the works

Nothing really being mentioned besides scouts watching Rays..
Maybe it could be a big trade no one expects....

He is also pitching because it was part of a contract obligation.

I had heard that speculated but not confirmed. I assume he had to be called up or released?

The wording I've read from reports was he had the option to void his contract if he wasn't called up by tuesday. Cubs probably didn't want to risk it.

Why start Matusz tonight? There were contractual obligations the #Cubs had to honor

He has to be on major league roster by Tuesday per his contract..

Question is, if Cubs choose to keep him
Doubt they go with 4 lefties in pen
So , is there a possible trade with Hammel or are they moving him to a team that wanted to see him start a major lge game

I'm not sure it would really matter that much given the pitching they now have in their bullpen on the 4 LHP. Strop, Rondon, and Edwards are all very good vs RH. They also still have Nathan. So, if you assume Rondon/Strop in 8th/7th you still have 2 good options vs RH.
