That's exactly what the width of the zone is. The ball has to touch the black. It's never changed.

Textbook or real life?

The strike zone as called in games does not,and has not, matched what the rule book says.

I have watched baseball for decades, and I can tell you a pitch at the letters (or close) has not been a strike at any time in the past 40+ years.

Umps decide on their own to give inches off the plate. It's ridiculous that this is accepted, but we all shrug and say "that's the way it's always been".

We wouldn't be OK with fair/foul calls being subjective, but balls and strikes always have been.

The strike zone has never officially been outside of the plate. Period.

If Chapman resigns with Cubs, I'd like to see Bosio teach him to throw a change up..
Just to be able to mix it in once in a while

Jesus H Christ, the whole point is we are NOT discussing official.
Well good. The plate umpire tonight called strikes that were not strikes, too. I acknowledged it. He sucked ballz. Hello, McFly.

Lol. The plate has always been 17" wide.

The conversation was about the called strikezone or did you forget.

So IOW he got calls off the plate that today's pitchers don't.

Don't be an obtuse jackoff, just because you don't like the way the conversation has headed. It makes you seem like a petty child who takes his ball and leaves when he starts to lose.

Chapman has zero movement on his ball. When his speed drops to 97 mph watch out.

The plate is the same width. The K zone has always been the same width. The K zone has been called more accurately because the technology and data available demanded it and umpires are held accountable for it. The people who look like obtuse jackoffs are the ones who don't acknowledge the technology and how it has made the umpires call the zone to the letter of the rule...so much so that MLB is considering moving the zone back above the knees where it was.
