Well again Maddon can't trust Butler past the 5th. 78 pitches in. He could have gotten the 6th easy with 22 to work with.

It doesn't change the outcome but it puts the pressure on the pen to cover 4.

And Jay is a better lead off than Schwarber and the D is a push

Add to it: I believe upper management is making Joe play his long term players.

If it was about winning then it would be:

Jay LF
Almora CF
Bryant 3B
Rizzo 1B
Happ 2B
Contreras C
Heyward RF
Baez SS

the fact they are not is showing management is in a long term vision right now and are letting guys get their lumps right now. Then when the line up has been battle tested reload the staff.

And how much winning do you think that line up would do?

Rockies look legit. Mite be the best team in the league. Cubs could avoid the embarrassment and just win tomorrow.

More than now. Almora and Jay have been solid this year. Happ is a streaky hitter as it is and is in adjustments right now. With Russell on the bench you can shift Baez back and forth to play match ups. They need to DL Zo with his wrist. Let it get to 100% or close to it. He is needed but healthy not soaking AB's unhealthy.

Schwarber is a head scratcher. It is getting to the point that he is going to hit or not. This year maybe a lost cause for him and Theo has to decide if this year is a adjustment year and sell short term and roll on with his crew regardless of the results or make deals for this year.

Sitting here right now I'm leaning towards they are looking at this year as a seller. I know that they are close enough to the Crew to make a stab at it but they are in a weak division and would get bounced in the first round.

I don't believe that result would change much. This year has been too flawed to think other wise.

So I wouldn't be shocked if Theo comes out and says they are too far from contending and Jake's recent success becomes trade weight. Wade Also.

From now to the ASG matters. That is reality.

Sooooo.......

We will sell Schwarber at his lowest point, after they made it clear after 2015 he was not likely to be traded, when he was at a much higher sell point.

Theo will announce - with his team a couple games out of the lead of the worst division in the league - that we can't contend, and will trade Arrieta and Wade Davis?

We will turn to your hero, Jon Jay.

Listen closely: I have said this repeatedly, but you won't listen. Jon jay will hit a shallow .277 over the season, play terrible D, provide little to no run production, and the team will lose when he plays. There is NO reason whatsoever to give Jon Jay playing time at the expense of Almora or Happ. Personally, I'd like to see a LOT more of Almora, and have a really good defensive OF out there. But the bats are forcing moves - in the wrong direction - to guys who provide offense at the expense of better D.

Play Russell and Baez and Almora on D and see what happens.

Biggest strength is versatility. But one weakness is Joe doesn't play any youngster 3 games in a row.

If you would read vs project, what I posted is the next 30 days will dictated what Theo does. How is that shocking. Teams that are out of it sell. Period

Theo has done this in a he past so he is not above it.

So getting to Schwarber. I never said sell Schwarber. So where that came from? I left that question open because I really do not know the answer. He has 1 good day then he shuts down for a week. He is hitting under .200 for the most of the season. At some point he has to hit or they need to get another option. Staying the course when the boat is sinking is not a winning strategy.

On Jay: he is hitting near .300. So I'm feeling ex-Card hate here. What I'm seeing is he has been a lead off. The Cubs need a spark plug.

What is happening? Happ and Schwarber struggling at it. Happ .210 now. Zo wist injury still playing vs in rehab getting his wrist healthy.

Long term getting Happ AB's right now pays off in the long term. Playing Jay helps right now but delays development. That is the same thing as Schwarber losing last year. He got nothing out of it and he is struggling.

My point is the next 30 days if they are buyers or sellers. Playing struggling players over producing players stacks the deck towards sell mode. If that is the goal I'm actually ok with it. I would rather know that the goal is to play for 2018 and use Jake as a way to help that situation. If they can extend Wade then make it happen. If he wants to hit the market then sell.

Now if for some reason things start to click with ithese guys then go for it. But I'm not going to sit here and say that they are going to amount to anything as is. They are losing against quality teams and can even tank against teams that they should be slapping around.

So a sense of direction would be nice. Right now the compass is spinning.

if the division stays around .500 nobody will be sellers with this year full of streaks.

They set the tone this offseason signing Jay and keeping Stella. What does Almora have to do. Two years ago it was Soler being the only guy hitting in the playoffs, last year it was a brainy move by Almora to tag at first base to dicate that inning. His reward was getting a bench spot because they went for Jay.

Sure there is ex card hate, but anyone they signed for 8 million was going to block Almora. I dont think any of us expected Happ to even be here this early.

Happ was not expected. Almora was a question mark. If they were building to win they would have resigned Fowler and got a legit starter

Jay set the tone in 1st inning, that ended with a Zobrist homer..
Be nice if they could add on but getting baserunners and leaving them stranded..

Arrieta pitching good but it's early , hopefully can get at least 7 out if him

Arrieta couldn't get through 5 after shutting them down for 4..
This been too typical for cubs starters this year..
Either giving up runs early or looking good for 3 or 4 innings then get blasted..

Also goes to show Maddon lack of confidence in offense this year, pulling Arrieta with 1 out and 2 run lead over letting him try and pitch out of it...

Tied game ..
Offense shut down after first 4 batters..
Arrieta was only able to give 4 good ones...

So glad they won it all last year...
