I agree but the bullpen was really bad too. Sans marshall and marmol

I agree, but I feel like that's the same as saying that the bench is the team's problem. I don't buy the bullpen being the main problem of a 87 loss team.

Never said it was the main problem, but it still wasn't all on Lee and Rami.

True words. Yet some praise Jim Hendry. :dunno:

I agree as well but I also praise Jim Hendry. I think Hendry has made some really good moves over the years (with the exception of Soriano) but the players have not produced.....not his fault! As I stated earlier....get rid of gauranteed contracts and this game changes for the better!

It's not all Lee and Rami but I feel they carry the majority of the blame. It is pretty tough to do anything when the middle of your order flops as bad as they did.

No, then we see the Players' Union on strike.

I don't know if I buy that the players aren't producing. IIRC, Zambrano had a year when he won 16 games, and Hendry gave him a huge contract. Why? Soriano is what he is...a pretty good power hitter who strikes out a lot and can't field. He's played the same with the Cubs as he had in the past. Nothing better, nothing worse. So is that deserving of a huge contract?

It is hard for me to judge the Zambrano deal. He can be as dominiate as any pitcher in the big leagues if he keeps his head in the game....the problem is he has these blow ups and then you wish they would get rid of him. If he pitches the way he ended the season last year I love the contract. I have never been a supporter of the Soriano deal.....I think Hendry just wanted to make a big splash in the free agent market that year and Soriano was one of the biggest names available.

I agree but I still think these guys should be held accountable. I would love to see the contracts state a certain batting average, power & RBI numbers, innings pitched, strikeouts etc. and if they don't produce at that level their salary gets prorated down. On the other hand, if they produce more than that they should get bonuses. This is how the business world works and i have heard many player interviews referring to baseball as a business.

When Soriano was signed, the Trib was beginning a chapter 11 re-organizational bankruptcy and owed the IRS a ton of fines stemming from their media outlets. While I'm sure JH didn't mind spending the money, he was told to by the Trib in an effort to maximize the team value on paper.

Well.....that backfired. The liability (contract) is worth way more than the asset (Soriano)

If people stopped goin to the games, Buying merchandise, it would send a clear message to the owners, that we are not happy with the product they are selling. But the Cub masses, are happy to spend a summer day drinking beer, sitting too close to each other watching their Cubs blow it.

Only problem with this is, the Pittsburgh Pirates were the most profitable team in baseball last year...
