God I hope so, it is just one piece of the puzzle but it seems to be an important piece. I really hope he can work his mojo with the Cubs and really develop the young guys and maybe lure a few top level FAs to the team.

Is this manager that much of a difference maker? Or is this just a case of a sane person entering the clown car?

Conservatively, let's say he makes 2 correct calls an average manager wouldn't in the season that lead to wins. At $5 mil a season that's an incredible return comparative to FA. Typically speaking 1 WAR in FA is between $6-7 mil.

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago Bulls
Well, he better recruit some hot shots from Tampa, or he'll just be yet another skip that kills his career in blue.

As long as Dews and Brett are still posting here, I will definitely go to the Sox board if the Cubs win the WS. Some of you don't like the smack talk, but having a little back and forth banter is fun. Or like berserkfury, put Brett05 on ignore.

There's a huge difference between a "little back and forth banter" and a couple guys who can't discuss anything positive regarding their own team, so they pee in someone else's pool. How entertaining.

They post in every thread on a Cubs forum to try to bring people down, or make fun. Must be fun to be a Sox fan.

Even when a team is going poorly, sometimes it helps to got to te team forum and commiserate. Misery loves company. The Sox don't even offer that as an option There is simply NO interest whatsoever in that team.

He's a difference maker but not that big of a difference maker because he's a baseball manager. Having hot shots come from Tampa isn't an important thing at all.

Which was explained that he got canned for not doing his job...aka like Doug Collins he was usurping authority from the GM. BUt you and Parade keep ignoring it.

Give up Brett. There a 1000 examples of managers getting fired. Many argue they did as good as possible under the circumstances. Many managers have been fired with better records than 73-89. Many coaches have been fired after winning seasons - and some examples have been posted here. You then choose to ignore or refute facts.

Earl Bruce went 9-3 every ear at tOSU, and got fired. He was doing his job. He had no run-ins with the Ad.

Ron Zook got canned at Illinois after back to back bowl seasons.

Matt Doherty at UNC.

Tom Landry

and on and on.....

Twins would be a great fit. Very similar position as the Cubs last year, with a lot of young talent ready to emerge

The Cubs better have a deal signed with Maddon. This would be a failure of monumental proportions if they don't land Maddon

Good grief. Do you think they don't?

Theo is not a fool. They wouldn't fire Renteria until finalized. They didn't fire him Monday, or Tuesday. His firing makes it clear they have signed Maddon.

@ESPNChiCubs: Source says there will be "small" changes/additions to Maddons staff. Main coaches will be back

Most likely just add a bench coach, though i read that 3rd base coach gary jones may leave cause he a Renteria guy...

I am excited for the news, Joe Maddon has been a pipe dream manager for the Cubs for me for a while now. Still can't believe he is coming to the North Side. That being said, I liked what RR had done in his time with the Cubs. It's kinda a bummer to see him go when he didn't deserve to leave. With a guy like Maddon though, you have to see if you can land him. I know the Cubs have offered him a spot in the organization, and I'm sure he would be good at whatever job they would give him. I hope though that he does not take it, and finds a Manager job somewhere else. I just think there would be too much friction if he hung around, even if he and Maddon say they are fine, there will always be some type of wall between the two. That being said, lets hope the team can go get Lester!

The real story here is they want to spend now and Rick as the manager is not a lure. Joe as manager is.

Rick did a fine job with what he was given. We all knew that when things got serious they would bring in a legit manager.

Having a guy come from a small market team like Tampa, that won there and in arguably the toughest division in baseball is a HUGE thing.

And if it was instructional in the minors and they seemed to have an edge on the competition when it came to player development, I am sure he would be glad to share whatever secrets they had since he will be coaching said players in the future.

We haven't had a manager since Piniella, and ironically, they both coached in Tampa. Lets hope Maddon goes a few steps farther than Piniella did.

Yes I refuted the two examples successfully. Then a third was brought up. Forget it drown all you want. Theo admitted what I had been saying with his remarks to Rick

IDR anyone saying that Rick was here for just three years to move the team along and then be replaced by a more qualified manager

Brett, are you Rick's butt buddy or something? I've never seen anyone fight so hard for a coach that was fired for going 16 games under .500.

Lets see:

They tried for Joe Girardi and lost. Had to scramble to get a breathing body.

Joe Maddon hit the market unexpectedly and they got him.

Seems to me that Rick was a fall back in the first place.
