John Fox: Bears LB Shea McClellin has a 'bright future'

shealb.jpg

It’s as though Shea McClellin is a rookie again. For the third time in four seasons, the Bears’ first-round pick in 2012 is learning a new position. Will he ever find success?

‘‘I think it’s just sticking to a position and not moving around all the time,’’ McClellin said.

To the surprise of many, Bears general manager Ryan Pace didn’t draft a linebacker last week, preferring to stick to his overall grades than reaching for a need. The Bears did add undrafted free agents Jonathan Anderson of TCU and John Timu of Washington, and both project as inside linebackers.

But barring any late additions or surprises, the competition for playing time at inside linebacker will feature McClellin, Jon Bostic, Christian Jones and free-agent signee Mason Foster. With Bostic dealing with a stiff back, McClellin and Foster led all the position drills during voluntary minicamp last week.

‘‘I’m just trying to get used to the calls, get used to the fits,’’ McClellin said. ‘‘It’s a different defense, a 3-4 now. I have to get used to that kind of thing, but it will be good.’’

The Bears didn’t pick up McClellin’s fifth-year option for 2016 — the $7.7 million price tag didn’t make sense for them — but coach John Fox continues to speak highly of him. Fox said McClellin eventually might move to outside linebacker, but he’ll focus on inside for the time being.

‘‘I thought highly of him when he came out of Boise State, [but] he was more of an outside linebacker in that scheme,’’ Fox said. ‘‘Right now, putting him inside, we’ll see how he does there, see how he progresses, because he is a good athlete. He does have good size, good length.

‘‘You know, we’ll see where he goes. It will be an easier switch to put him someplace [outside linebacker] where he is more familiar [later]. . . . I’m excited to watch him. I think he’s got a bright future, and we’ll see what he does with it.’’

For the first time in his career, McClellin is in a defensive scheme he was projected to be in.

‘‘I always thought that was my true position, a 3-4 out-backer,’’ he said.

McClellin, though, said he’s excited about playing inside in coordinator Vic Fangio’s scheme. McClellin’s versatility remains an asset, but his goal is to establish himself at one position. He underwent a major body transformation when he switched from end to linebacker last season.

‘‘I would like to settle into a position,’’ said McClellin, who started 10 games last season at strong-side linebacker. ‘‘It does get difficult just switching. It’s my third switch now.’’

McClellin also wants to stay with the Bears. But being in the final season of his rookie contract, he has to earn it.

‘‘If you want to be a linebacker, this is the place to be,’’ he said.

Hey, will give the guy one thing...he was brought into an organization that tried to make him somethign he is not.... then had to deal with a sucky coaching staff trying to salvage him, in one of the worst defenses in franchise history. I hated the pick, and have never been a fan of him, but man cant deny the fact he hasnt had much of an opportunity to succeed since being here. For his sake, hope they can make him work and he can contribute to this team this year in some fashion. Be a nice suprise to see him progress and become a solid part of the defense going forward.

I enjoy hearing support from a coach too, but what about Acho? I'm more excited about him than Foster.

Let's see if I got Pace's game plan down...

Trades a perennial pro-bowl, 1200 yard per season, true #1 WR for peanuts.

Dumps yet another perennial pro-bowler and well respected team captain CB from the D when we're already depleted in the secondary and then doesn't even sniff the position in the draft.

Uses his first round pick and 3 of first 4 on offense after watching the previous 2 seasons of worst defense in the history of the team.

And now, is using his HC, trying to jedi mind-**** us in to believing that a guy who could be confused for skinny armed Rob Lowe, who should be pushing a mop is actually worthy of playing in the NFL.

Well, if the guy's plan is to turn this 5-11 team into a 2-14 team, he's definitely doing well.

Don't agree with a few things you said but you nailed the skinny arms comparison.

I would love to see McLellin progress in this system with these coaches and I actually think he has a chance to now that we have proven coaches that are changing the culture with our Bears. He seems to have all the athletic abilities needed but just needs to be coached up the right way.

haven't read the article yet, just thought the title of the article was an interesting pairing with the photo given. Shea has a bright future, so let me use a photo of him (more than likely) missing a tackle.

Acho will be a rotation OLB and should get plenty of chances and Shea will be playing ILB to start anyway.

Well, he is right that Peanut was a perennial probowler. But he is not that anymore. The same could be said for Briggs.

But you can not fault the GM for going BPA. The stars lined up to offense in this draft.

Or maybe he's building a team the way him and Fox want it and trying to change the culture which getting rid of a loud mouth player in Marshall and a old injury prone CB in Tillman will help do, and maybe trying to give Shea a little confidence boost by letting it be known that the new coaches haven't given up on him and he'll get every chance to prove himself next year?? Just a thought.

We alll wanted peanut back but after 2 back to back injuries on the same tricep on a guy in his mid 30's its time to startt thinking with your head and not our hearts. Marshall was a total mess last year on and off the field and while my favorite all time bears WR he was expendable. Shea on the other hand i have no clue what they are going to do with him. i just cant see him contributing but im not a coach so who knows.

Agree, Tillman is one of my all-time favorite Bears...hated seeing the tailend of his career clouded by injuries. Was an underrated corner for most of his career and was perfect for Lovie's Tampa 2 D. Marshall is another one of my favorites, understood why he was let go even if I didn't agree with it. I thought the Bears could make it work if they kept Marshall, but I'm fine with how things played out. With the switch to a 3-4 LB's are a premium and not drafting a LB this year might as well let him play for a position in training camp. The Bears are still on the hook for $1M plus this year, so at worst they cut him and eat the $1M at the end of preseason. I think expectations for Shea are minimal.
