@thekapman: Red Sox offer was 6/135. Cubs sign Lester for 6/155 plus a 7th year vesting option for 15 million.

@Jim_Duquette: Option would vest at 200 IP in last year or 400iP in final 2 years #cubs.

a 7th yr option did the trick

The only bad thing about this is that April is 4 months away :(

Been watching MLBN since 3 watching the same commentary multiple times waiting for this news to break.

Ive read its not going to be a big bat. More like a high OBP type, low signing guy.

Where did you read that?

I saw Jesse Rogers saying he doubted they'd really go after a big bat, and that it may be talk.

So now all this talk heats up about Jonny Gomes to platoon with Coughlan, so is Kris Bryant playing LF or 3B?

Ive read it from different sources on twitter. Ive read it before the winter meetings. I heard they are looking for a Lastella type bat for LF. Thats means OBP.

Via Cubs Den
"Lester became a great ally of the pediatric cancer community with the NVRQT campaign. During meetings with teams, he stressed the importance of his charity work. The Cubs’ emphasis on it during their mid-November meeting – while most of his other get-togethers included strictly ownership and baseball-operations people, Chicago brought in community-relations personnel – stuck with Lester, as did the straightforwardness of Epstein and Hoyer.

“The thing I liked about ’em is it wasn’t forced and wasn’t a sales pitch,” Lester said after his meeting with the Cubs. “It was like, ‘This is what we can do.’ I don’t want BS. I don’t want show. I don’t want glitz and glamour. I don’t want to walk out to the field with your name and number on the JumboTron. I’m not 18 anymore. I want you to tell me what you can do for me and my family."

By COT's Contracts, they are 47,509M before Lester putting them at roughly 73 million. The ARB's are Arrieta, Wood, Castillo, Valbuena and lesser like Coghlan, Ruggiano, and some young bullpen arms. I would estimate another 20 million or thereabouts.

fucking payrolls can really jump. players shouldnt cost this much. it wasnt long ago when 100 mil was high for a team payroll. i guess its not how much you spend but how you spend it. i hope this works out for you guys. i really dont feel like hearing bernstein ***** 4 years from now on how the cubs made a mistake for a year like the soriano deal.

Cots hasn't added in Lester or Hammels numbers yet

But it should be close to 82 mil without Arbs..

I still would like to see them add another everyday bat ..

Yeah. I tried to edit my post, and forgot about Hammel, but that is still only 9 more. Cots has Montero already added so 47.5 million plus Lester, Hammel, and the arbitration boys but really, Arrieta stands to be the biggest, and then a drop off to Wood, Castillo and Valbuena, so it is still pretty modest, and I think about 102-105m.

That said, they still could move guys like Ruggiano, and then the trade possibilities like Valbuena and/or Castillo still remain a possibility. Albeit a remote one.
