True. That's why I'll bet that, at some point this season, you'll see Smith skating with Toews/Kane. May not last too long, but I think he'll get a shot.

And yeah, I recall Game 6. Lucky enough to be there, best fan experience of my life.

Lucky bastard...:)

With a player that sat in front of the net (Buff) the Hawks beat the Canucks in the playoffs. Without him, they did not.
As for your sabremetric-like stats ... I'll give your credit for effort and really can't say much else because I have no idea how those kinds of statistics work (nor do I really care).

I don't think you're ever going to find a statistical correlation that will indicate how Brunette will do next season. Is he upgrading his linemates? No doubt. But there isn't a guarantee that it will work.

However, I believe it will. Why? Because with a 2nd line of Brunette/Sharp/Hossa, you have three different styles of play that work well together.

Brunette can win 50/50 pucks and get to the dirty areas to maintain possession of the puck. He can get the puck to Sharp/Hossa who then have the ability to pass/shoot/finish from all over the ice.

Imagine any 3 on 3 rush in for this line ... Brunette center drives to the net while Sharp and Hossa find the opening to make the pass and the goal. And if a save is made, bet on Brunette to be there to poke home a rebound.

Simple hockey tells you their line sets up very well.

On the bold part: The hawks were missing a lot the elements that they had in the 2009-2010 season, it wasnt just buff that was missing when we played the canucks this past season, as I agree that buff rattled luongo at times, we still had guys in front of the net majority of the series. maybe not the caliber of buff but there still were guys there. But to pin the 7 game series loss due to buff not being there i will disagree with since there were alot of elements missing.

I am not saying that brunette wont contribute, i am not ready to leap to say he will have better numbers based on the line combinations. Some of the users here say I am ignoring "stats" and net presence ( an i wouldnt be surprised if fire and passion was brought up ) but anyway, one does have to consider regression and aging. No matter what the history is on a player, regression does happen. The comparison between chelios and brunette that i saw on here earlier was just ludacris.

With all this said back and forth, if we lose dave bolland to injury we are in deep shit.

and to ansewer the question that TblowDahog asked, i would have made a 2nd line center the priority. The could have still done something to correct that before the season and still obtained protection (guards) players for the guys like kane and toews.

Hawks would not have been able to get a 2nd line center without overpaying for him, and then the Hawks would've been right back in the cap-strapped situation they were before moving Campbell. I was hoping for one, but they wouldn't have been able to get one for a fair price. The FA market was bare this offseason.

True. But once they started getting to the net, they won three in a row. It didn't have to be Buff, but no one seemed to want to fill his role (hence probably why Brouwer is gone).

that is the truth right there. he was supposed to be that guy, and wasnt. sad that smith was doing alot of grinding in front of the net.

Noting that Bickell is also a big guy- and has played on the Toews/Kane line (probably briefly) - but that didn't work out so well either.

Hossa- if it matters is a great play maker (I watched some game replays -and he does a lot of the little things -makes unbelievable passes in traffic...)... everyone on Minne blew at scoring in this past season -so, no idea what to expect, certainly don't expect less.

Bolland getting injured ( well same with anyone really) -there should be some flexibility (money-wise) in making a move if needed.

However -too, I do agree with the point that adding a true second line centre would have been a big upgrade for the team... it wasn't about if the team had depth at centre- it could have had exponentially -more- depth at centre if you have Bolland slotted into the 3rd centre spot (especially with guys that seem to have an offensive upside). I would (and will probably regret this) add Stalberg to the 3rd line group ... mainly here is a guy whose production is dictated, to some extent, by his ice time - but, I would think a 3rd line spot would be the perfect setting for a guy to face low pressure, offensive opportunities -where the opposing teams' lines would be focused upon matching up against the top 2 Hawks' lines. Granted, a player in that situation would probably end up producing similar numbers over the course of a full season -just due to scoring opportunities : ice time (as expressed as a ratio). Say 10-20 goal range in any given season.

To be fair, I wouldn't expect much more out of any 3rd line winger.

Edited to add: - on a lighter note- I doubt Lionel Ritchie has ever been involved into any conversation on ice hockey with as much passion. . . I will never ever hear "Dancing on the Ceiling" in the same way again. :D

I never compared Chelios to Brunette, just used Chelios as an age example. Again you try and mix up what is said.

An as far as the center goes Bowman has said it in the media, theprices on centers have gone up. after you get these RFA's signed on top of the center you want you can forget about the Sharp extesion

do you honestly think there wasnt/isnt a trade that could have or could be made for a 2nd line center. Im not stating that we should have gone specifically the FA route.

No because you add that salary to the books. The best way to get a center was to trade a bit more with Campbell and get Weiss. Again like I said if you add a #2 center there is no Sharp extension. After they see what he wants/gets then moves can be made to get hm because they will the know where to look for next year. The way it sounds Sharp is top priority in Chicago right now.

You guys got to realize Bowman is building for now, and the future. He's slowly saving cap for the studs who come up from Rockford or whoever else they get.

The Stalberg Point Tracker. Everytime Stalberg scores, is how many time the "Cawk" brothers can suck it.

damn, thats as whole lot of sucking it.....I mean 12 or less times is soooo much.

Damn ... and here I was figuring that "wanting to capture the spirit of the thing" ... I was going to have to change my avatar to Christopher Cross, or Michael Bolton or something...

I might just have to go with the geritol Zeitgeist thing and do an Andre Rieu ... (er never mind ... ) :D

Ok, the thing is --- that, in normal situations -when taken literally, there should be an issue with doing any ...

oh forget, it- if anyone is ok with doing it even once... then I got nothing. :rolling:
