You bring up a good point in general about the modern artists of today..To me they seem more interested in the visuals than the quality of their music..

Perfect example was Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga on the Grammy's

Tony was just trying to sing the song, and there was Gaga all dressed up like Jessica Rabbit, waving her hands in front of Bennett's face with 4 inch nails making a spectacle of herself. I thought she was gonna put Bennett's eye out... Her voice is very good, but ya couldn't concentrate on it because she looked so out of place in the jazz setting Bennett and his group displayed. If she would have toned down the visual, the performance would have been very good..

BTW...Nice guitar solo by one of Bennett's guys

I know we are all old cranky people around here who are frightened and confused with the modern world but the spectacle that is the music industry has never been shy to gimmick and visuals. Even before MTV showed up, to take it all to higher levels, there were still the theatrics within the industry at live shows and how many musicians advertised themselves.

Trolling again?

If you would actually read my post, you would see that my beef isn't with the use of theatrics, but the overuse of theatrics to the point of overshadowing the musical performance. Of course theatrics has always been a part of Music, but once it becomes the main aspect of the performance it cheapens the music

He is doing something right. You may not like it and i may not like it but that doesn't change the fact that he actually has tapped into something or some dumb part of popular culture that loves his schtick and will continue to pay him attention.

The fact that a thread about Kanye, on a predominately white, rap hating board, got this amount of responses just proves this^ statement true.

Great post.

It is unfortunate than many are more into the image than the music. I always find it hilarious when people say Kanye plays the villan because it brings attention and therefore great marketing..

Uh, Id like to think someone's music ability is enough to bring about the public eye. If you are in need of attention of the stage you either are desperate or just truly a piece of shit.

Kanye West isn't a businessman, he's just simply a piece of shit.

Atleast Gg allin was legit insane and did shit in front of camera because he was... Just insane.

Are you speaking in terms of the marketing plans you were taught in 1985 or the more current models of marketing? Kanye won because there is this giant thing called social media and instant advertising and instant branding that he knows how to exploit. You realize that there is this giant portion of our culture now who just sit around waiting to discuss topics like Kanyes whackiness..oh so whacky. Gotta tweet...gotta blog...gotta youtube...gotta get on CSS and talk about Kanye and his craaaaaaaazy ways.

This all has nothing what so ever to do with his music anyways as this guy has investments in a lot of other areas most which would be unkown to average individual. He is in no threat of losing his financial well being by scaring off a few potential dollars from itune purchases. Kanye fans love this kind of shit he plays and they expect it from him. Do you really think Kanye believes his own gimmick and schtick? He is pulling an andy khaufman on everyone who hates and can't see past his schtick and to those who get it who are entertained by it and expect it.

Lol good god it's hilarious. Again, don't you think considering he's like "omg a amazing producer rapper" his actual work would speak for itself?

**** it. Least Springsteen and other real musicians let their work speak for themselves instead of needing attention. Kinda pathetic, really.

I don't take a guy eating his own shit seriously at all. I take that as fantastic marketing, because half those spectators came to watch what he was going to do next.

Kanyes a *****.

I really don't understand why pretentious music fans care so much about this shit. Is Kanye stopping you from enjoying Springsteen and the other "real musicians"? Listen to what you like it's still there for your pleasures.

End of the day this is all very subjective shit. I am not a Springsteen fan myself. In fact I don't relate to a single emotion, message he emits in his song writing nor do I enjoy his composition at all (besides The Wrestler..that was a great fucking song). But I don't go around telling people not to listen to him based on my lack of interest in his music or because I find him very droll and uninteresting. I allow other people who enjoy him and who can relate to him do so. Just don't understand why people ever care where others are getting their music kicks from or where they are spending their entertainment dollars or attentions. This concern always seems to come from garage band musicians or disgruntled musicians who never got the attention they desired themselves.

And don't feed me the BS that other mainstream musicians like Springsteen don't enjoy the added bonus of the attention. Not buying that holier than thou ideals. Levels may be different but it is always there. Bruce himself has done a very good marketing job with his image esp in his earlier days when he broke into the mainstream market.

Also what makes this all so funny is he pulled this act off at the Grammy Awards. The fucking Grammy Awards? Since when were the Grammy Awards simply about the music and the craft of music making and the "sanctity of creativity"? If there were ever a proper place for Kanye to sell himself it's at the Grammy Awards. Actually more so the billboard music awards but both have become one of the same anyways. Good god.

What I would like to see is Kanye to run the stage during a Springsteen concert and spew his spew. Bruce would Honkey Tonk Kanye and music fan or not I think we would all like to see that.

I love people who use music written by talented people...
I get to hear it again...
The guy that wrote it got paid again... (Dolly Parton was worth like a couple million dollars, after Whitney she was worth like maybe 20 million... I'm sure Dolly's like "Thanks"!)

Pretty sure Vanilla Ice started this...

WTF? Trolling? I really hope you're trolling.

Frank Sinatra helped co-write a total of 7 songs.

I'm A Fool To Want You (with Jack Wolfe and Joel Herron, 1951)
Mistletoe and Holly (with Dok Stanford and Hank Sanicola, 1957)
Mr Success (with Ed Greines and Hank Sanicola, 1958)
Peachtree Street (with Jimmy Saunders and Leni Mason, 1950)*
Sheila (with Chris Hayward and Bob Staver, 1949)
Take My Love (with Jack Wolfe and Joel Herron, 1950, an adaption from a theme from 3rd Symphony by Johannes Brahms)
This Love Of Mine (with Sol Parker and Hank Sanicola, 1941)

Not exactly his hits.

Vanilla Ice! That's outstanding!

Edited to add: Kanye has written 132 songs, pretty sure he's not done yet. Of those 132 songs I am currently enjoying zero.

Once again, dont let him being an asshole take away his talents. He's probably one of the best producers of all time in hip hop.
