Just got back from vegas myself- I booked a room, paid 30 for early check in.
When I got to the desk (ahead of 100 or so others waiting in the regular line) I put a 20 between my ID and credit card, and asked if there were any upgrades.
The lady gave me top floor, corner, strip view, hot tub, and sent champagne every night.
It also overlooked the pool, but waaaaay too far up to see anything.
for reference, I had booked a higher end room to begin with, so it wasnt economy to suite.
The best part about the whole deal was the elevators- there were 4 elevators that serviced floors 1-30. there were another 4 that serviced 31-36. for 36, I had to insert my key card in a slot and the floor number would light up, and go directly up no matter what other floors were lit.
totally worth the extra 50 all told.
