As mentioned--Dalton wasn't liked initially because lots of people were expecting Russell Wilson, and that's not Dalton's fault--its the idiot fan's who thought Seattle would trade their elite QB who's under contract for several more years at a very, VERY reasonable price tag compared to other elite QBs and believed the idiot pundits who needed to stir the pot post-superbowl after Russ' own agent said he didn't ask for a trade but gave the teams he'd accept a trade to anyways when it became that dead 5ish weeks before the start of the new season/FA/draft nonsense amping up...

Tuning out the Russ nonsense--its still reasonable to be less-than-thrilled with a guy they overpaid for (kicking 6 of the 10 mil into void years eating future cap), could have had last year but the genius GM gave a mid-round pick for Foles before fucking his cap numbers so that you can't cut him now and couldn't give him away all offseason, who took an ugly shot to the head in Dallas, and who's money spread out/fiscal mismanagement of the GM is the reason you no longer have an all-pro CB1 still on the right side of 30 years old.

He can be....middling which sadly helps a team who've had many guys struggle to be middling. And yes, compared to Chase Daniel (who wasn't signed to be a QB1 so I don't get that comparison) and Tyler Bray (also not signed to be a QB1) he IS better to have in the QB room.

I said when we signed Dalton that the situation felt just like Glennon and we'd be taking one somewhere the draft. Like you, I'm also not a Dalton fan but I do suspect he'll start for a short time. Knowing that's the plan, if Fields starts game 1, it tells me that he'll be considered to be prepared. Still, wouldn't it be exciting for him to replace Dalton mid game and rally a win.
I think everyone in the world knew they were taking someone somewhere in the draft. With Glennon it wasn’t as obvious because he had just signed a big multi year contract.

The fact that Fields fell to where he did was either a godsend or a sign of the apocalypse.

Well, if the Cubs can win a WS is 2016, then we can have a good QB lol.

Lots of posts about drafting a T even if a QB was there in one. Drafting OL in 1 and 2.

Right but your post I quoted said “somewhere in the draft.” Most everyone had the Bears taking a QB in 1 or 2 most just didn’t think they’d have a shot at the top 5 and almost no one thought we had a chance at drafting Fields.

Personally I thought the draft was going to look something like Jenkins in 1 and Mond in 2. Had the Bears not traded for Fields with the way the board fell it probably would’ve been Darrisaw/Trask.

My point is nobody saw Dalton as anything more than a stopgap whereas I think teams actually bought the Glennon signing as the plan at QB.

I think it'd be more exciting for everyone and their mother to pick the Rams D vs Fields' first start, and he hangs a 30 burger on them.

Jordan love wasn't this level of a prospect.

Let me turn the question right back at you.

How much did it hurt Mahommes to have him sit for most of the year when Alex Smith was leading the charge?

From my eyes it doesn't appear it affected him at all other than to help him prepare...
Not starting Mahomes in 2017 was the the exception to the rule. The highly drafted rookie QB's start in the NFL early in their careers. Burrows, Herbert, Mayfield, Darnold, Allen, Watson, and yes even Trubisky. NFL coaches may tell the fans we have a plan in place to develop said rookie, but then the season starts and reality sets in that this rookie gives us the best chance to win. Plus the best way to develop a rookie is through reps both in practice and games.

nah...I saw Andy play last year with the Cowboys. He was trash. Look up his highlight reel, it's mostly his receivers doing the work and saving his ass from interceptions.

He's better than Mitch or Foles so is an upgrade even without Fields. I doubt he holds Fields off for very long but I suspect he gets some snaps.

Based on what ? I already posted his numbers hes led offenses to the exact spot we were in the past 2 years .

Im not even gonna get into the Cowboys who were averaging 32 ppg when Dalton took over and 22 ppg under Dalton in the worst division of all time

But before that he had

Benson
AJ Green
Marvin Jones
Jermaine Gresham
Benjarvious Green-Ellis
Tyler Eifert
Mohamod Sanu
Giovani Bernard
Joe Mixon
Tyler Boyd

and hes been nothing mediocre I dont how anyone could or would expect anything different at this point.

The issue is not his numbers its that people actually try and push that its somehow better for the Bears that Dalton get those reps with the ONES when we know based on history what the outcome will be at best . With the way the new NFL rules are setup practices are mostly just glorified walk thrus as hitting in pads is limited so any and and all games reps in todays nfl are important .

Any scheme plan for next season that doesn't involve the a serious commitment to running the football is a fireable offense after what has happened the past 2 years . So I dont see starting Fields as some sort of death wish if the team, is seriously committed to running the ball and not trying to sling the ball 35 to 50 times per game.

Nothing really to *hate* about Dalton. I think it was just collective disappointment by most fans who were suckered into believing the bears could get Russ.

That being said, I think QB wise the bears have not been in better shape.

The rifle, while not being exactly great, is a competent qb. He may not win games outright, but he won't lose them.

Then we have a generational talent in Fields who will make a push to become the starter.

I don’t think there is a lot of Dalton hate. The biggest disappointment was going from the Wilson rumors to Dalton. Whether or not Fields starts, I think Dalton is a great qb to have in the building.
I didnt even mind NOT getting Wilson or Watson. MY GOD the offers the Bears were making were counter productive at best.

Things just seemed really bleak when Dalton was named the starter, teams were trading up or trying to trade up for QBs like a wildfire before the draft even started for any hopeful QBs of the future.

Unfortunately the Bears sitting at #20 in those scenarios made Dalton look like a deflated endeavor. Even with an uncharacteristically high volume of young QB talent available.

I really hope as many 5 of the top QBs, or any of the newly drafted QBs can carve out a positive legacy for themselves with the league still in need of some QB talent to hopefully become household names.

Dalton isn’t really an upgrade over what they had last year. People keep saying that as if it’s fact and because they want it to be true. It’s actually not though.

If Dalton starts then pray he can go something close to .500 before Fields takes over.

Fields needs to be the starter sooner rather than later. I’m pretty sure Nagy’s job being on the line will speed up this process.

Not sure why all the hate on Dalton. If we hadn't drafted Fields and Andy starts the entire year he is probably the best QB the franchise has ever had

It's not much of an upgrade but an upgrade nonetheless.
That said, he's older than when I could honestly say he was that upgrade so he could still prove me wrong. Says more about how dire our situation was than anything else. I have never been a fan.
The issue is that Foles is done and Mitch couldn't run the O so even though Dalton has his warts, he should be a functional upgrade. Everyone and their mother expects Fields to be significantly better. I mean, there's a reason he was drafted and we're all this excited but I'm happy to let this take its natural course.

Are you sure about that, because it seems to be literally the exact opposite. Andy Dalton is NOT an upgrade over Mitch Trubisky. Andy is here because Mitch had to leave because of the situation created by Nagy.

Neither of them have elite arm talent, or football IQ. The are not QBs that are going to take over a game, but with both of them if you surround them with talent and provide them with protection they can be successful. They are very simular passers, but Mitch has elite mobility.

I think you are absolutely biased because you are soured on watching Mitch not win playoff games the last 4 years on poor offenses. I think if you would ask Cincy fans who they would rather have as a backup QB they would say Mr. Football. If you ask Bills fans they would say Mitch. If you ask Seahawks fans who do you want to back up Russ out of the two, they would take Mitch.

The fact is they both suck as a starting QB, but they both have a lot of experiencing starting. Nobody is going to get excited by anything they can do as a passer. Mitch pluses are mobility, age, and saves you 8MM in cap.

Mitch would have cost almost $15m more than Dalton had we exercised his option and he wasn't signing here for what he took in Buffalo. A choice he made to reset and not about income. Anyone signing him as a starter would have paid him low starter money, just like Dalton. Dallas wanted Dalton back.

Honestly, I never thought I'd be defending Dalton on a football board because I'm not a fan. He's just better than what we had. He sure won't look special but at least is capable of running the O which was noticeably handicapped with either Mitch or Foles.

I know this doesn't fit into the message board hero or zero meatball idiom but I tend to get projected there by fanatics anyway.

I'll give you better than Mitch between the ears, but why Nagy went back to Mitch last year was because Foles was slow and the OLine struggled to give him 2.5 seconds on many a drop back which led to some stupid, shitty throws and Mitch was mobile enough to give himself more time before choosing to chuck it up into blanketed coverage as opposed to the wide open guy he could never see.

Dalton during his best time in Cinci was a middling QB who had an above-average OLine much of the time and elite WRs that he could feast on with short/mid-range passes. Could never win a playoff game whereas Foles--albeit with one of the best OL and a well-timed hotstreak in football during 17-18 season, won a Superbowl. Then you wonder how much more Dalton could have lasted behind the Bears shitty OL against good competition last year--and--you don't have to think hard, because with a dilapidated OL in Dallas last year--Dalton became roadkill who put up 20ish points a game as pointed out by someone else; and until 3 gift games of an ambulance squad in SF, Philly, and the Bengals at the end of the season--Dalton led the Cowboys at a robust 3-9...

So an upgrade over Mitch? Yes. Over Foles? I don't buy it even with a differential in salaries (Dalton didn't get paid after he never won the big game), but you go nuts. Dalton and Foles are another Shane Matthews/Jim Miller, and one having a good day one week and a shitty day the next before replacement is just more of the same sad middling-at-best to me.
