They re-up their studs. Posey got re-upped. Albert was bought out. Your studs get traded on the down side of the mountain, not crawling up the mountain.
I don't disagree but there is a balance. You identify the guys that you move forward with and if there's a guy that looks like he might be a huge overpay as a FA then you might trade high. Ideally the Cubs won't be a team where a Posey has to be resigned because he's basically your franchise. I'm talking about smart choices and constantly reloading as you go along. Epstein did a decent job of this in Boston with only a couple questionable moves towards the end but no one knows for sure how much ownership was meddling at that point.
