Let alone, if Detroit isn't in the race near the deadline, they may want to work a trade with a team.

True. And that new team may sign him long term too. It's far from, let's just get Price in the offseason that this forum gives off vibe wise.

I don't think it's that easy at all, in fact I think it's unlikely. Will they keep their eyes on him? Sure, they may even assess what a trade may cost if Detroit is out of the race at the deadline (even money IMO as that's a poorly constructed team, albeit talented) but if I were to put ods on it I'd say the chances of Price ending up a Cub is 10-20% tops. Plus I think he's going to get $200 million from his next team so there's that too.

Not sure who they're going to get but Cubs will have another TOR on the team by the start of the 2016 season.

No question. It could even be Price. These guys are going to leave no rock unturned and there's a long time between now and 2016.

I think the Cubs will look to deal some parts to get a TOR pitcher, or deal some of their depth in hitting to acquire someone else's depth in pitching. Just my two cents. I don't want to shape the team with nothing but free agent TOR's where you are bucking the heavy weights constantly. That is for another time and place.

The Cubs should deal some prospects to put the young nucleus of pitching into the system. I'd much rather them be in their early 20's, and you pay them 25-30 million for 6 years versus 155 million.

The Cubs have Edwards and Johnson ready to somewhat take the next step. After that, their is a big void, and you have to go back to "A" ball to find the next crop. The Cubs need to start flooding the system with good pitching anyway they can. The draft is a start, but they need it in the AA and AAA areas shortly.

IMO this was theo's biggest error. But he has time to fill up the team with some pitchers coming up in the draft and like you said look at trading someone like a Castro for two TOR type guys in A ball or something along those lines to help rebuild. The Cubs have a position of strength at SS which is why I used it as an example.

Theos been on record saying he's shied away from Pitchers early in drafts due to the nature of their position and injuries that come from it. He's also said that with taking all these great batters that he would be able to eventually if needed trade some around for established pitching which is obviously better than taking a chance and spending big $$ on a kid early in the draft.

If ignoring TOR pitching in the top end of the draft turns out to be an error it will be a tactical one. Frankly I think it will work. They've drafted pretty well in terms of arms in the lower rounds and should see a couple of guys with TOR potential start to distance themselves from the pack in the next few years. Guys will come in trades as everything solidifies too. Until then pitching is going to be expensive but with revenues rising that shouldn't be an issue. So could it be an error? Sure , but I get the feeling it won't be.

Also with Vogelbach, Baez, Alcantara and Almora, I could easily see them as the most expendable, Castro on the parent club because like you said, represents a position of surplus, and Bryant, Russell, Soler, and Schwarber as probably the safest to stay as far as the youth.

Maybe they can get by with a Latos, Porcello or something if they become available. I didn't really see the Royals doing what they did with Shields, Guthrie, Vargas, and Ventura in the rotation, so maybe the Cubs are not that far off in the pitching department. An ACE would be nice, but I have seen teams win it all with less.

I don't expect Price to hit FA. And for reasons I can't put my finger on, I fear that even if he does, he won't be the stud people want him to be.

I know he has said it. I just disagree with him. You don't see young 20s pitchers getting traded for next to nothing. I feel Theo has been dead wrong here.

Who said for "next to nothing?"

Yeah, but you do see tons and tons of young pitchers flaming out due to injury or not developing.

If any of these prospects pan out you're going to have a crowded team and could easily trade some bats for an established pitcher whether he's 24 or 29. Shit, we traded an established starter in Samardzija for prospects and trades like that happen all the time. I mean there are plenty of history on teams doing that. Idk why it's so hard to believe.

The Cubs have a legit 5 guys in the minors or majorleagues that can hit 30 plus homers. In todays age, that is a lot of value.

I agree. But to get a 20's early pitcher that is a TOR is just more valuable and harder to come by.
I mean what would you have to offer to get say Ventura from the Royals? Two of those 30 and a couple of lesser guys probably. Maybe even more.

EDIT: 20's

the Cubs are going to spend a lot of money on pitching. That's started already. I think that's the benefit of money and the depth of the system. I don't know if it will work but I think it will. Theo tried a different path because frankly with the pitchers he could have drafted the rebuild probably would have gone another couple of years. Houston is rebuilding through pitching, started a year before Theo and company and is at least a year behind. With the way this team has been able to identify pitching value I'm inclined to trust them.

They always have in my eyes. The best pitchers aren't always there or they don't buy into "This time it's different" philosophy. It's a risk for sure.
