The TV deal will literally be worth billions of dollars. Any amount of "dead" money they have in Lester/another pitcher will be insignificant at that time.

Most of the talk ash been that the billion dollar tv deals are done. Even by Cubs beat guys

Cubs deal is with "Stuck in the 70's" WGN, to televise games only to people within walking distance of Wrigley.

Oh they are going to get a better deal. But I think the view is something like $50 millionish per year. Still a very nice chunk of change to grab, but not a Cubs TV Station like once hoped for with $200-300 million annually coming in.

Let's see where the market goes.. With Detroit and Boston seemingly leaving the sweeps for Scherzer.

This may get interesting and I don't think the Cubs will pursue or would have a big chance. Things can change though.

My thoughts. This wreaks of Yankees.

Not at all, I am not dropping that much money on two 31 year olds. Pitching has been having an injury epidemic and guys who relie on velocity become very hittable as they get older. Its hard for them to learn how to pitch when they cant blow a guy away with a 99mph fastball. He is not for us IMO.

**IF** his contract wishes aren't met and we can get him a bit lower. (I don't truly believe it'll happen.)

Go for it.

But.. I'm sure this is what the Yankees were waiting for and they'll jump.

It doesn't make sense to go all in on another guy when so many options will be available next year, and probably for much cheaper than what Scherzer is going to command.

I also believe CJ Edwards is in the Cubs plans later this year and into next year. Unless he gets hurt, the Cubs are going to start this kid soon in the majors.

Ehh sorta true sorta not.

I'd rather have Scherzer over a Price or a Samardzija.

That's why if it's a perfect storm and we could end up with him.. Do it. (Probably a 2% shot)

Scherzer has 2-3 years left at a CY Young and then he will probably drop off drastically. His style of pitching doesn't age well. Lester on the other hand can be a very good pitcher into his mid-30's.

Scherzer also has a lot of miles on his arm. About the same as Lester, but Scherzer is also a fireball thrower. He will look like Verlander in the near future. Still capable of throwing a gem every now and then but not really a guy that can be counted on to throw gems 3 times a month.

I think the Cubs are good at SP for now, unless Shields can be had for cheap. They need to actually trade a SP or 2 just to clear some things up.

Lester
Arrieta
Hammels
Hendricks
Wada/Turner/Wood/Jackson/Dubront

is solid. I expect Dubront to go back to the pen. Hopefully Jackson gets shipped off elsewhere. Maybe they hope he turns it around but hard to see them wanting that burden. Wood is a great bounce back candidate. He isn't as good as he was in 2013, nor as bad as he was in 2014. I think Wood is my favorite of that bunch because he is capable of shutting teams down every once in a while.

Assumptions.

Both Lester and Scherzer could blow up tomorrow.

No one knows.

It's been discused quite a bit that their pitch totals are vastly different, given their similar age.

Lester 26,321

Scherzer 20,954 which is <80% Lester's total.

Upgrade somewhere else with the money I like our starting line up now. As stated before in thread I like the idea of getting price through a trade

The market for free agent pitching is starting to dwindle, and with how the Cubs have showcased their desire to groom position players (due to lessened volatility) and acquire starting pitching externally, I think it's more likely the package assets and trade for a pitcher. Teams are starting to inquire about Travis Wood and I could see a team looking to take him and some prospects in return for a front line guy. David Price and Cole Hamels seem like obvious choices, especially Hamels since Amaro has been in direct contact with the Cubs about Wood's availability.

Still anxious to see how the Cubs solve their left field issue and one more starter.
