Do it Urblock..... I would have gotten a dog already if I had a yard and/or another person living with me to help me take care of said dog.

I can get one I just don't know that it will work well with me downtown/commuting 10-12 hours a day and I would need to get up earlier than I already do to feed it and take it out and whatnot.

Some day though.

EDIT: I swear if any of you ******* suggest fister move in with me....

My wife and I have had 4 dogs in the last 20 years. Two things to consider:

-They die every 10 years or so and that is alwys very sad

-The trend these days is to fix dogs just like humans. That means you can end up spending 3-5K on medical bills i something bad happens. In the old day people just had their dogs put down. Something to consider

I love that breed/mix because they are so smart and very athletic. be warned though that they need to be active. I don’t know your living situation but if you don’t have a yard and the time to spend with them then things will turn ugly. If left alone and without a purpose they invent things to do with their time. Digging, escaping, or chewing, destroying things if left indoors are typical behaviors for this high energy, intelligent breed IF they aren't given a job to do and are left alone a lot of the day. Basically these aren't lazy dogs that will lie around all day and wait for you to get home. They will find something to do with their time.

The upside is that the sky is the limit on what they can learn to do. Tricks- you name it and they will pick it up with only a few times being shown what to do. House breaking should be minimal as well.

Lastly they have a herding instinct that you must be aware of. if kids run around them this instinct will kick in and they may nip at heels to try to contain the kids. bikes must be herded as well as far as they are concerned. leash walking - they tend to NEED to be in front of you instead of beside you, again this goes back to the herding instinct.

If you or your wife has the time to keep them from being bored and to challenge the dog then it will be the best breed you ever have.

I grew up on a horse farm and we had several Aussies. I live in the country with a large fenced yard and take a brisk walk everyday all year. It will also help that I run my business from home. You're right Ommie they don't last long. We had 3 dogs and a cat die in 4 years.

I have an Australian shepherd/lab mix. He's as smart as an aussie, but he's as lazy as a lab. He's the best dog I've ever had.

I love dogs and grew up with a couple as a kid, but I never got one as an adult. The main reason being, as Omelet stated, you get so attached to them, then they die. That was always very painful for me, and I don't feel like going through that.

I love blue heelers. But they don't love kids, and are known for snapping at small humans, which is why so many get put to sleep :(
