My last two dogs have been red heelers, my current one is 12 years old. He has me trained to do everything. Every day he takes me for a long walk, and he has it all planned out in advance the route that we are going to take. Scooby comes first before everything, even the Bears. There is nothing in the world like an Australian Cattle Dog. I know exactly what he is thinking and plotting at all times, and he knows the same about me. They are fucking brilliant.

I have an aussie heeler mix fwiw. Wonderful dog but very spirited and willful and requires a firm and loving approach. She would absolutely run the show if we let her. Also needs lots of activity to keep from getting bored.

I love that breed/mix because they are so smart and very athletic. be warned though that they need to be active. I don’t know your living situation but if you don’t have a yard and the time to spend with them then things will turn ugly. If left alone and without a purpose they invent things to do with their time. Digging, escaping, or chewing, destroying things if left indoors are typical behaviors for this high energy, intelligent breed IF they aren't given a job to do and are left alone a lot of the day. Basically these aren't lazy dogs that will lie around all day and wait for you to get home. They will find something to do with their time.

The upside is that the sky is the limit on what they can learn to do. Tricks- you name it and they will pick it up with only a few times being shown what to do. House breaking should be minimal as well.

Lastly they have a herding instinct that you must be aware of. if kids run around them this instinct will kick in and they may nip at heels to try to contain the kids. bikes must be herded as well as far as they are concerned. leash walking - they tend to NEED to be in front of you instead of beside you, again this goes back to the herding instinct.

If you or your wife has the time to keep them from being bored and to challenge the dog then it will be the best breed you ever have.
Sorry I posted before I read yours. Agree completely with this.

Surprisingly greyhounds are lazy. The love to all out sprint for a few minutes, then just lay around on the couch or the closest lap. I have fostered a few and they have all been awesome. The last one we fostered, we looked up its race results from its ear tattoo. It was badass. He placed high in all his races and then was kicked out of the leagues after snapping at other dogs mid race! LOL! Alls fair in love and racing!

Yes, my parents fostered many greyhounds and they do lay around alot. 40 mph couch potatoes.

Friend I used to work with has 2 of them beasts.... they are cool but I don't think I would ever get one lol I can find a more reasonable sized couch potato to hang with me.

Lol he told me they used to buy whole chickens from a butcher shop to feed the Greyhounds...

Now we have to decide if it's going to be one of these or a Bloodhound from my friend.

Thats not a tough choice for me at all. I'd take a Aussie, or border collie over a blood hound any day.

I think the Aussie mix would be better for our active life. One of my friends pups won the Westminster dog show hound group. Aussie mix probably wins.

I've already done the 2 dog thing. **** that. I'm worried that the Bloodhound will be like my 200lb St Bernard. He thought walks were for other dogs.

Two dogs is the right number to have. If it's only one it gets stressed when left alone, and if it's three one gets left out when they are playing.

That is part of why I think the Aussie would be good for us. Many days he could go do things with me. I make my money in chunks so I have too much free time. Turn that into puppy time.

Scout, a few minutes ago, demanding her evening snack. All this could be yours, Urblock.
