It may just be that Thibs wants his guys to play with a bit of an edge to them, like in being pissed off at him and wanting to show him how screwed up he was to sit them. That may be some of it. He might be somewhat like some military leaders(see Patton) who wanted his men to be more afraid of him than they were of the enemy
