Breaking news: According to multiple reports, the Cubs have fired Mike Quade. Mike Quade took over the Cubs as interim manager when Lou Piniella retired in 2010. With Quade's late success after he took over for Piniella in 2010, earn him to become the manager for the following year. Former Cub general manager Jim Hendry signed Quade to a 2 year deal with a 3rd year option after the 2010 season. Quade was slated to make 1 million in 2012. However, the 2011 season did not go as plan and was the main reason Quade was let go. He did not manager the pitchers that good and his baseball moves were not good. The Cubs finished the 2011 season in 5th place and had a 71-91 record.
A statement from Theo Epstein:
“Jed Hoyer and I had an all-day meeting with Mike last Thursday at Wrigley Field, and Mike and I continued our dialogue with a lengthy phone conversation yesterday after the press conference. Today, I flew to Florida to inform Mike in person that the Cubs have decided not to bring him back as our manager for the 2012 season.
“When I joined the Cubs last week, I knew that Mike had a reputation as an outstanding baseball guy, as a tireless worker, and as a first-rate human being. After spending some time with him this past week, it became apparent to me that Mike’s reputation is well deserved. His passion, knowledge of the game, commitment, and integrity stood out immediately. While Mike is clearly an asset to any organization and any major league staff, Jed and I believe that the Cubs would benefit long-term from bringing in a manager for 2012 who can come in with a clean slate and offer new direction.
“The managerial search process begins immediately. We are looking for someone with whom and around whom we can build a foundation for sustained success. The next manager must have leadership and communication skills; he must place an emphasis on preparation and accountability; he must establish high standards and a winning culture; he must have integrity and an open mind; and he must have managerial or coaching experience at the major league level.
“I want to thank Mike for his nine years of excellent service to the Cubs, and we certainly wish him well in the future.”
As you read that, it does not sound like Ryne Sandberg will be a candidate. Ken Rosenthal just reported that the Cardinals have ask permission to interview Ryne Sandberg. To take over for recent retire Tony La Russa.
Candidates that could be options to manage the Cubs in 2012 are... Brewers’ hitting coach Dale Sveum, Red Sox bench coach DeMarlo Hale, Rangers’ pitching coach Mike Maddux, and Cubs’ bench coach Pat Listach. More to come as the news just broke a little bit ago.
According to 670 the Score, former Red Sox manager Terry Francona could be in play for the Cubs manager position. I'm not so sure about that and I don't think it'll happen. I think Francona will take a year off and then come back for a job. So... I don't see him as an option.
I have to say I'm happy and it's good to move another direction. It's time to start from scratch and this was a much needed move.
The news did not break too long ago and more rumors-candidates will be announced. Also, let's see what happens to the rest of the coaching staff too.
More to come...
