Yeah, it's the inconsistency. 3 games is a joke. A fine or perhaps a game, but 3 games, complete farce. The NHL is a total bushleague when it comes to things like this. It starts on the ice with shit officiating and goes up to the disciplinarian who has no clue on what he is doing.
The next CBA better include clear instruction on supplementary discipline and far higher fines, than the current "beer money" that it is today. I would be in favour of a base number of suspended games for different infractions with additional tacked on depending on other factors, such as injury. Intent must always be the starting point. And the criteria for adding games should also be clearly stipulated. Along with a suspension there should also always be a fine, which could be a certain percentage of the players salary and it should be high enough for them to feel it. And players are to be judged equally! No more BS like it is today that the status of a player factors in on the supplemental discipline, stars get off far easier than grinders and rookies. With clearly stipulated rules on suspensions it should be able to curb the wild inconsistencies we see today.
And the issue of diving and embellishment should also be addressed. We see this sort of behaviour increasing already and implementing a system that I just described would surely mean that players would be looking out to milk it as much as possible. I think that players known to dive and embellish should be put on a public list so that the officials and fans know who to look out for.
And as for the inconsistent officiating, I would like to see a transparent and independent organ that would be evaluating officials over the season and be able to suspend or fine officials who do a bad job. As it is know they are above any criticism and scrutiny and I don't think it's healthy. And there should be a process for teams to file grievances against officials if they feel that they have done a bad job. I almost think that officials should be paid on performance.
