I have never played goal do i hold the opinions of goalies on this board pretty highly.
I still think it was all embelished but i was thinking last night. Back in my lacrosse days wearing full helmet and cat eye mask. I remember taking a shot to the chin before and due to the impact on my helmet it did ring my bell pretty hard and it was one of those moments of a quick black out and ears ringing. Thats why i didnt mind smith resting on the ice for a while. God knows i had to. Its an instant shock moment when you dont know what just happened.
It was that flailing around that i just didnt buy for a second. This is what i ment by not caring about smith laying around on the ice variable. If you have ever had an ear ringer you would know what i mean. But again i have never seen anyone flail around like that when being hit who ever eventually became diagnosed with a legit injury on a play like that unless they were sprayed with acid or attacked by a wasp nest....i know the wasp nest one first hand...dont even think i flailed around like smith did. And that was the worst pain I ever endured
Agreed 100% although goalie masks are much more protective than Lacrosse masks.
Great post though. I've gotten my bell rung before and I sure as hell didn't have the ability to whip off my gloves and mask let alone move. I just have no respect for Smith after seeing that, the way he acted made it seem as if he broke his neck, suffered a bad laceration, poked his eye out, or possibly even broke his jaw -- it didn't look like a "bell rung" type of injury at any point. Karma is a ***** and it bit him in the ass at the end.
I've had pucks hit me in places where I've pinched nerves and gone numb/warm for a few moments, I've gotten my bell rung, elbowed in the head, hit in the collar bone, bruises as big as a baseball. Sometimes I've needed a moment to shake the pain if I take a puck off parts of my forearm/wrist (my chest protector has its holes) or the cup, but never have I whipped my gloves off in that way and kicked my legs. Usually if I experience any sort of pain I get up as quickly as possible and wait for the next whistle to take a skate and put some water on it. If I can't get up for 5 minutes, that means I won't be able to finish the game.
Shit, one time I fractured my wrist from a slap shot, hurt so bad I dropped my stick. Refs blew the whistle as the puck went out of play, I picked up my stick and could barely hold it, finished the game as there were only 10 minutes remaining. I didn't need 5 minutes of flailing and kicking for that -- if anything I don't even think the other team knew what happened as I remained calm about it. I'd prefer they didn't know, if they did they'd probably shoot there for the rest of the night.
